I have pictures of the secretions? This is an issue I have, to a significantly lesser degree, on my other Silkie. On my other hens I can barely even feel where the bulbs are in the sides of the gland, but on those two it's often a lump the size of a filbert (hazelnut).
Has anyone had any experience having their chicken's preen gland surgically removed? My 4 year old silkie hen has always had issues with it(she has extremely thick, chunky gland oil, and I've had to regularly express it in the past). Recently, one duct was completely obstructed, and the gland...
A friend built this for my girls. Cathy fell off a truck on its way to the processing plant and broke her pelvis over a year ago, and she gets scrapes on her legs sometimes, so this helps get the pressure off.
This literally had me cackling with laughter. My dogs are also terrified of the chickens, after a few "that's MY food" pecks. My dogs are also greyhounds! They have learned that the chickens really love their food, but don't care for it after it's been digested, so that's when the dogs get it
When the local big box farm store gets chicks with issues, they call me. Usually, it's something simple, like spradle leg, but today I got something completely different. The baby died shortly after arriving, but I want to know if this is something I now need to worry about in my birds. I took...
Got a call yesterday from the local Stockdales that one of the new chicks wasn't walking. I picked it up, and initially thought it was a a spraddle, but now I think it may be a slipped tendon. Here is a pic of how she holds it.
I frequently take in dumped/unwanted fowl of all sorts (typically Pekin ducks) but today I had a huge surprise waiting for me. It was a Brabanter rooster! He's a bit banged up (presumably from other roosters), and skinny, but seems to be lively. He's extremely sweet, and sat in my lap for almost...
Thanks. I was afraid of that. She is definitely a meat bird, unfortunately. I appreciate the frankness, though. I just want her to have the happiest life possible, for as long as is reasonable.
About a month ago, I was given 8 young pullets from the local TSC that were limpy or otherwise compromised. 7 of them are doing great, and completely healed, but one looks like her leg is on backward. She may have slipped a tendon when she was very small that wasn't corrected quickly enough, or...
So the local TSC called me about some injured chicks they had. Most ended up being fine, but one has a wonky leg. I was putting her in a sling in hopes of stretching it in the right direction before hobbling her, but now she has a big hematoma on the hock. Is it an old slipped tendon? Is there...
