Anybody else having air quality issues because of the wildfires in Canada? So far ours was the worst yesterday afternoon, but it's still bad this morning. A lot of folks are back to wearing masks again, only outside instead of inside now. I really feel for our animals that can't escape to the...

Congrats to him, and to you! I don't know what all those awards and decorations mean, but they look mighty impressive!

Hello, and welcome to the new folks! I'm never sure who's new or not, since I'm such an inconsistent BYC-er myself. (It's not you, it's me - I pretty much suck at any kind of social media.) But welcome! This is a terrific community!

Thank you so much for such a thorough reply. I think you're probably right that this is what it was. I'm not so worried - now I'm just feeling very sorry for the poor fox. 😢

That sounds hopeful then. It seemed quick - at least quick enough to get away from the dog.

So...this is worrying me a little. Does it sound like rabid fox behavior? A fox crossed the driveway right in front of my daughter as she was going out to the bus stop (6:45am - early, but pretty light already). She said it barely looked at her, & it was "mangy." 5 minutes later, my son was...

Prolapsed vent won't stay in, & she's struggling to poop

Hi. Thanks for checking. Actually, right about when I was giving up, the prolapse went back in on its own. I never made any headway with it at all, & I don't know exactly how it happened. But she seems completely back to normal, & I'm very grateful.

How have I never heard of freezing eggs?? It never even occurred to me! I must know more about this magic!!! 🤩

Has anyone here ever gotten chicks from the Mill in Germansville? It's a feed store up north in Lehigh county (a little bit of a drive for me since I'm farther south, but not bad). They have a big "Chick Days" event in April with a great breed selection. I got four chicks there in '21 - all...

Do you have a way to "call" your flock to you?

Most of mine will run up to anyone who comes outside, & I also have a container with treats in it (usually mealworms). When I want them to go back in their run, I stand at the door, shake the container, & call "ChickENS! ChickENS!" & they run right inside. I have one very skittish bird who...

Prolapsed vent won't stay in, & she's struggling to poop

So far, nothing is working. I honestly can't tell any difference since it happened 5 days ago, except she fights harder when I try to treat her. Even touching her rear with warm/lukewarm water seems very painful. I try to pop it back in now & then, but it seems like torture to her, & it comes...

Prolapsed vent won't stay in, & she's struggling to poop

Hi. I've got a 3-year-old hen, breed unknown (was supposed to be a California White, but is not). She has always been in good health and my best layer, until the last couple of months she started laying sporadically, and occasionally soft-shelled eggs. I attributed it to a wintertime molt, and...

Hello! It's been a while, & now I've spent an hour looking through back posts & admiring everyone's recent pictures. Things are pretty good here. We didn't get new chicks this year, so not much pecking order drama. And we've had a couple close calls with predators, but no fatalities. My Cream...

Look at this! This mini-coop was thrown together in an emergency, & is handy for sporadic isolation needs. I know it needs to be reinforced, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I had a broody hen in there, & could tell something had tried to get at her during her last night. The day after I...

Can I still pickle these eggs?

I hardboiled a dozen eggs (store-bought) 8 days ago, but didn't end up using them like I thought. They've been in their shells until today. Can I still pickle them, or are they too old? They smell fine, but a few have yellow/green areas on the whites. I've never seen it before. It's not the...

Lehigh County question - non-poultry related. So... if I report that a dog attacked my dog, and BOTH dogs were off-leash, how likely is it that I'll get in trouble too? It was in a nature preserve, where I rarely see anyone else, but technically leash laws still apply. Mine wasn't the...

So cold and snowy yesterday! I had to run out first thing in the morning (couldn't be avoided), and then my car couldn't make it back up the hill to home! I ended up parking in a random church lot and walking. By the time I got home, it was 11am and no one had thought to check the chickens...

    1st time deworming: Safeguard pellets?

Hi. I've got a small flock of 7 hens, ages from 10 months to 2 years old. Generally healthy, though one is just coming out of a molt. I'm seeing quite a few poopy bums & poopy eggs lately, so I suspect worms. I haven't seen any actual worms though, so I'm not 100% sure. I haven't been spending...

I think I've got to de-worm everybody. Not totally sure, because I haven't SEEN any worms, but I'm seeing poopy bums & eggs. My husband came home with Safeguard Fenbendazole in pellet form, which is all they had at TSC. Now I'm reading mixed things about it, but I'll do my best & chalk up...

Finally got my first blue egg! Don't know why she waited this long, & then decided to start laying the middle of winter, but I'll take it! Now if she can only find the nesting box next time, that'd be great...
