Let me preface by saying: I am a first time hatcher. Everything I know about hatching has come from the internet, specifically sites like this. I have read through BYC members Sally Sunshine's Hatching 101 and Beekissed's Simulated Natural Nest Experiment, which was the closest thing I could...
I have searched and searched and have come up empty. My mealworm colony is sharing its space with a larder beetle colony. I have no idea how they got there, but I'm finding more larder beetle larva than I am mealworms. Is my colony screwed? I have mature darkling beetles that are between 1-2...
Thanks for the advice. The dogs don't even look at the chickens. They couldn't care less, even when the chickens are squawking and flapping their wings. They stay at least 10 feet from the fence at all times.
UPDATE:
The chickens have been outside for 4 weeks now. We decided to put up a solar powered electric fence that has successfully kept the dogs out and the chickens in. Now that the weather is nice, the dogs and the chickens are spending most of their time in the yard, and there have been no...
It's the chicken feed. Look at the ingredients for copper sulfate. It specifically inhibits growth of insects. I was using it and my worms were not pupating. I changed the substrate to wheat germ and ground up Cheerios, 2 days later I had my first pupa. Also, I put a heating pad under them and...
I got a big black rubber bowl at the farm supply store. It's the perfect size for my 7 chickens and tall enough that even if they're standing in it, they can't scratch it out.
They put themselves to bed around 8 when the sun goes down and I make sure they have enough so that they finish around that time. If there's still a good amount of food in the bowl I'll move it from their run to the coop.
If I find their bowl empty during the day I'll give them more.
I've been fermenting my chicken's feed for about a week now. I fill their bowl in the morning and pick it up to clean it at night. My problem is: the chickens seem to be starving in the morning! Do y'all leave food down overnight or is it okay for them to go all night without eating??

I think you mean protractor. That could work. Put the center of the protractor on the center of the egg (the point where lines of symmetry intersect) and measure..something. The angle may be too small. It may also vary depending on which side of the egg we're looking at.
The circumference idea...
A suggestion: Home Depot has tillers for rent. They have one for $38 for 4 hours. They have bigger too. It's a $150 deposit and it gets refunded as soon as you return it. Save yourself some time and back pain.
Agreed. Height/width/weight measurements and ratios would give some additional quantitative data to allow the experiment to be replicated. While it won't account for external factors like incubator/genetic variability, at least we can compare apples to apples. Subjectivity in descriptors and...
Does anyone know where I can get composting worms (red wigglers) for free or cheap in the cny area? I hate throwing away kitchen scraps but don't have the discipline (or the stomach, really - those maggots are too much) to turn the compost barrel all the time.
