I have 3 black australorp pullets and 1 black australorp/rhode island red cockerel. All are from the same clutch and have grown up together and are about 3 months old now. They live in a 96 sqft enclosed run, so they have plenty of space. These past two nights, one of our pullets has been...
It's okay :) We actually decided to keep the very last boy because he is a mixed breed. I'm hoping he can mate with the hens without inbreeding issues (at worst he is their half brother) to bolster our hen numbers. Technically we aren't allowed to keep him, but we will give it a shot and hope no...
What a relief! Now to make sure they all stay healthy and strong. If just one of them dies I will need to get more hens and make my first foray into flock integration...
Here they are! I'm hoping only 1 of them is a boy. The one that I think is a boy is actually a hybrid black australorp and rhode island red. The rest are pure black australorps.
We had 6 total this morning, but I just gave away the 2 I posted pics of so now we are down to 4. Just 3 hens would maybe be enough for our eggs, but 2 is too few. We originally had a straight run of 12, but only 9 made it this far and we've already given away 3 cockerels before today.
😨 😭 What about the one on the very right where you can't see its head?? Are you unsure because you can't see the head or does it look like a boy because of the feathers? This is some crappy straight run luck :(
What do you guys think of this other one? This one I am really not sure about because it doesn't have the same saddle or tail feathers as the first one, but has a bigger comb and waddles than some of our other BAs.
Darn that's what I think, too! It's a shame because we can't keep him. I love his shimmering green feathers! My wife and I think our BAs look like peacocks :love
Do you guys think this is a boy or girl? Our neighbors think it's a girl, but seems like a boy to me. It crows (only) in the morning (but stops after I feed them), but I read and heard several people say some black australorp pullets crow.
Just posting an update in case others have a similar issue and find this thread. We gave them a 5 day treatment of amprolium and it worked :) First day there was less blood, second day very little blood, and the last 3 days no blood at all and the chickens are all doing well.
Thanks so much everyone! I suspect the one he thinks is a girl is really a boy. So far it looks like 4 out of 9 from my straight run are hens. Not bad!
We have some 8 week old chickens and we noticed that one of them is pooping blood. I think it's just one because the vast majority of poops look normal. We changed their feed recently but I'm not sure if it is just a coincidence. None of the chickens are acting differently than normal.
My wife and I have a 7.5 week old black australorp cockerel that likes to peck our hands when we put the feeder on the ground in the morning. This morning, he pecked my wife's hand so hard it almost drew blood. He's pecked/bitten us several times each. We found someone willing to take the...
We just sent that pic to our seller and he said it's a mix of an australorp and Rhode Island Red that he accidentally sent us. I think we hold onto it for now and sell numbers 8 and 9. Seems like a lot of people think number 1 is a boy but not 100% sure, so I will wait another couple weeks maybe...
