Is this chick ever going to feather out, lol?

Thanks for the fast response. That's just what I needed to hear. Looks like her tail is finally starting to grow, yay =)

Is this chick ever going to feather out, lol?

I feel like the new over reacting mom here. Even though I'm not new to chicks I've never had one be so slow to develop. She is super active and eats well (crop empties fine during the night). She is falling behind the group as they fly around and she can't go with them. The photo's below...

Anyone use a decoy owl for Racoons and hawks?

We managed to catch one more Racoon with marshmallows. I do like the idea of a second trap since they have been traveling in packs. We learned right away we needed to weight the traps down. They're smart critters and just tipped the traps over to shake the food out. Sorry about the loss of...

Anyone use a decoy owl for Racoons and hawks?

Thank you for the responses. OK so it's a no on the decoy. The photo of the hawk sitting on it says it all, lol. Marshmallows huh? Interesting, I never would have thought of that. I just happen to have a few left over from the holidays I'll be baiting with them tonight! We happened to...

Anyone use a decoy owl for Racoons and hawks?

I meant to add that we managed to trap one racoon last week. But they do not seem too interested in the trap. Any good bate suggestions other than cat kibble?

Anyone use a decoy owl for Racoons and hawks?

After 4 years with no problems our neighborhood seems to be over run with aggressive racoons and hawks. Groups of 3-5 racoons are killing chickens and attacking cats and dogs. We free range our girls during the day and lock them up in what we call "Chicken Fort Knox" early evening. Our...

Gate to the run... Open in? Or open out? Does it matter?

The gate to the area I keep my hens in opens out and I hate it. We plan to rebuild it this weekend and have it swing in. I am forever shooing them back in. I hate having to walk in and then turn around to shut the gate. It would be so much easier to slide it shut with my foot or use my back...

Chia Pudding (yes, as in cha cha cha chia)

Does anybody have a good source for chia seeds. We bought 25lbs for $90 last year (from Bob's red mill). They do not have any in bulk right now and the best we are finding on line is $200 for 25lbs. More than double plus shipping.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.... Bumblefoot

I just completed surgery on my hen's foot earlier tonight. Same issue here, gravel everywhere (tons). No clue how we will ever get rid of all of it, but I'll try to start hauling in mulch to cover it. I took her to an avian vet a few days ago and he told me to continue soaking in Epsom salts...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I'm a little behind in my reading, but I had to tell you how much I enjoyed this post. Thanks for sharing =)

    Bad Mother... Poor Chick

Great advice. Wish I had had more than 3 chicks, this would have been a great solution. She was such a good mom to the other 2. I didn't mention that she killed the first black chick and this one was a replacement. She definitely had it in for non cream colored chicks. So weird.

    Bad Mother... Poor Chick

My mama hen attacked one of her chicks two months ago. I removed the hen from the brooder. The other chicks and the mama cried for two days straight. Finally I moved the brooder so she could lay next to it. Once the mom was right next to the brooder they all calmed down. She stayed there...

Mites! Do I need to toss their Deep Litter?

Sounds like good advice. I just hated to lose all that good manure. (7 months worth) But it's not worth risking. I thought I read that you could bag it for a few weeks or maybe it was months since the mites would die off by then. But I don't want to risk it.

Mites! Do I need to toss their Deep Litter?

I should add the hens, coop and run will be treated tomorrow!!! I figure I need to do it on a day I don't work so I don't have to rush it.

Mites! Do I need to toss their Deep Litter?

I've been anxiously awaiting spring to clean out the deep litter and add it to my compost pile....only to find my girls have mites. Unfortunately their favorite place to play behind the coop is covered in bark dust. I"m guessing that's where they got them. Or is that possible? We also added...

    Screws Poking through Roof?

The nails on my run come threw. My husband didn't want me to bend or cut them so we're going to cut up an old hose into 1" sections and push them up onto the nails. It'll look funny but at least no one will get cut and will be an easy free fix..

You are most welcome Good luck with your roofing project! (We got all our ideas from BYC members, isn't this place great!)

    metal roofing

Just lost my PM response to you...I'll try again here lol First I'll tell you what we didn't like about our roof (remember this is our first attempt at building lol) I wish I left 6" of overhang not 4". But it seems to work just fine as is so I'm not going to worry about it. I also wish we...
