I picked up what was supposed to be 12 cornish cross from TSC last April. I ended up with 5 Cornish cross, 6 buff orps anf a white leghorn. TSC is sort of a gamble if you ask me.

I'm willing to bet it is just the handling issue. Temperature extremes certainly make it worse, but it is still a handling issue. I have better outcomes if my shipped eggs travel less than 300 miles. I guess it has something to do with less transfers.
It is absolutely possible that it was someone other than the framing crew. BUT, it did happen over lunch and there were 10 plus guys on a two story house 60' from the pen/orchard. Some one should have seen something.
I don't know if they are related but I'm keeping my eyes open from now on.

I did speak with the foreman. This guy has built 40-50 houses for my wife over the last 5 years so we have a pretty good relationship with him. He'll find out who did it and fire him. He'll try to get me something back but it is unlikely. He doesn't want a thief working for him either...
Yesterday my breeder pens were attacked by a two legged predator. My wife is building us a new home right next to our current home/office living arrangement. While I was in town yesterday someone helped themselves to a breeder pair of Greenfire Farms Cornation Sussex and a trio of my Salmon...
Fifty feet from any dwelling...
The coop needs to be 50' form your house and the neighbors' on each side AND the neighbors' behind you as well. Lots only 60' feet wide could present a challenge.
I was a Sanitarian/CEO in Texas. We were not to observe in a manner that could be interpreted...
I think it is a BA that holds the record for the most eggs laid in a year. They are good layers. If it is winter where you are and the days are shorter you may want a light in the coop. I have mine on a timer that comes on at 4 AM and then off a little after sunrise. Keeps most of my ladies...
My chickens provide my family and several others with great food. Both eggs and meat.
Here is the way I feel about it.
Raise them with dignity and respect.
Provide them with quality food, good shelter and lots of TLC.
Give the a clean, quick death.
Send them off with one final, fantastic meal...

I just finished reading your thread on gynandromorphs. Great Stuff. Has there been any publications from your collaboration with the university? I'd like to see the data from any studies/observations they have conducted.
