My americauna died from eating a roofing nail. She acted hunched up and sick for weeks, I treated the whole flock for cochi to no avail. Had to discard the eggs for weeks, ect, ect. I had no idea what did her in until a necropsy was done. Roofing nail imbedded in the gizzard- must have been there...
Almost all of mine (except the polish for some reason) face the window and look out. Their beaks are just inches from the window. Its great because the roost is at my eye level and the window is hardware cloth for the summer. So at dusk each nite I can go and chat with them very very up close...
I have one standard partridge in my flock that I got from McM. They are exactly 5 months old and several of the others have already started to lay-americaunas,barred rocks, ect. I got her after seeing the huge beautiful cochins at the Biltmore Estate here in Asheville- they get all of their...
Hoe about at least draping a sheet over a section for some shade ? Plug in a fan out there ? It was 90 in our run today, in the shade, and they have all been panting, too.
They will pick out the tinier pieces in there, you can also mix in some corse sand. Mine are now eating the larger pieces of grit at 3 months old. They used to sell chick grit but it is impossible to find anymore around here so I went with sand and regular grit.

did you use galvanized??? most cable staples are not galvanized.
I'm in asheville too
No they are not galvanized because we were nailing into pressure treated 4x4's in some places but most of it is rough sawn pine. My dh is a contractor and just explained to me how galvanized is a...
I would add shutters or something similar to be able to close up those lower windows in the winter. They don't mind the cold but don't like drafts blowing up under their feathers when it is even slightly chilly. And IMO the roosts are way too skinny. Chickens have pretty big feet and like to be...
see the very clear barring coming in ? I kind of wish I had not chosen to get her, she is beyond hard to catch -don't know if I will be able to round her up at dusk with the others. But i was tempted by her possibility to lay at 4 months old....and she is very pretty and different looking than a...
I'm not too sure you have a fayoumis there but I could be wrong. here are pics of mine -first and second pics are at 4 weeks. 3rd pic is at 6 weeks...[
I just switched from organic feed to non medicated DuMor 2 days ago and their poop reeks to high heaven, and they also have diarrhea all of a sudden. :-( i'm going back to the good stuff !
Our 6 week olds have been eating Countryside Organic since birth up until 2 days ago when I switched them to DuMor. (temporary I hope,we are broke this week ) I know every 4th or 5th poop is supposed to be runny but now there is an excessive amount of runnies and they stink to high heaven...
I am not a huge fan of "cute" names. I like old lady names better for some reason, just seems to suit chickens. Like Hazel, Myrtle, Esther, Phyllis, etc...
Just found this list of old lady names ,there are some really good chicken names on here ! http://nameberry.com/list/248/Old-Lady-Names
