    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

From our research it might be that is has babies under the shed. So it goes out for food during the day and then protects the babies at night.

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

I will try to post a picture of the coop. The little one in the video is not in use except when introducing new chickens to the flock. The coop is actually very secure except when I don't close up the doors. I am worried that their may be baby skunks under the shed because we have been seeing...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

Caught video of the thing running around a couple of days ago. We tried spreading mothballs all over the place but apparently that didn't work. We had a neighbor comment about the strong smell of the mothballs but when I told her it was to try to keep a skunk away she seemed okay with the...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

I have thought about that. Most likely this is what I will do. I just need to be careful where and how deep I drive them because of cable and phone lines. This would also allow me to add an electric fence wire on the inside of the vinyl fence in case anything does get inside or manages to dig...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

I appreciate all of the suggestions, but I must not be making myself clear on the type of fence I have. It is a solid panel vinyl fence. There is no place to attach hooks, zip ties, etc, unless I make holes, attach fasteners of some sort, use some kind of adhesive epoxy, etc. That is the main...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

I would rather not damage the fence. It is a vinyl privacy fence.

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

Thanks I will look into that. I am a bit worried they if they eat the laxative they are going to just mess all under my shed, but I would hope the smell of that would dissipate faster than if I sealed it up first and accidentally trapped either an adult or babies under there. I have been out...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

I was meaning I could old go 6" deep, just don't want pissed off neighbors if I cut through their cable, but I planned to come out at least 2 feet into the yard. I was planning on sealing up the backside of the shed where they are getting under it. It is about 1.5 feet away from the vinyl...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

They way they got into the coop was because I left both the human and chicken door open. As I mentioned I had been leaving them open because I was lazy and wanted to let the girls come and go as they wanted and it has been getting hot so figured opened doors would help. I have since been...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

Any idea on what the laxative would do to domesticated critters like cats? Also any links to that electric fencing you mentioned? As to the hardware cloth on the ground let me see if I can explain it a bit better. I was going to dig down about 6 inches on the inside of the vinyl fence, since...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

I was going to pick up some hardware cloth for the vinyl fence, the problem is how to attach it to the vinyl fence without messing up the fence. Also I'm limited on how deep I can dig in that area due to the cable and phone lines running along the back of the property. I was thinking of trying...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

I do have the windows all secured with hardware cloth, just need to be sure to remember to open and close them as necessary. The small attached run on the coop is very secure, it is just the run area that takes up half our yard that is surrounded by the welded wire fence that I'm concerned...

    Skunk Keeps visiting Chickens

So a little background. We live within city limits in a small rural town. We have a field, currently planted in wheat, on the back side of a 6 foot vinyl fence, which serves as the back side of our chicken yard. The rest of the chicken yard is enclosed with 1" x 2" opening 4' welded wire...

    Trouble Integrating New Chickens

I had the little ones separated in a small chicken tractor at first. Right now the little RIR is in the house recuperating and when we place her back out we will put her in a chicken tractor in the yard so all the others can see her but can't get at her. I want to keep her like that until she...

    Trouble Integrating New Chickens

Well a new update. We had a scalping occur last night when they were trying to position for roosting space. Our RIR is now living in a pet carrier in our office. she ended up losing about a 1.5 x 1.5 inch section of skin and feathers. We cleaned it out and treated with iodine and it looks...

    Trouble Integrating New Chickens

Thank you for the responses. I guess I should put a little more info. We raised the new ones in a small chicken tractor that was separate from the area we keep the other chickens. A little over a week ago we moved the tractor into the fenced in yard part with the older chickens and left the...

    Trouble Integrating New Chickens

We have two ~18 week old hens that we are trying to integrate into our existing flock of 4 chickens. The 18 week old RIR ended up getting picked on, but we tried not to interfere with the pecking order. I went out last night and noticed that there was a gash that was about 1 inch by a 1/4 inch...

8 week old Speckled Sussex - please say she's a hen.

I know this is a very old thread but looks like we have a speckled sussex that is at least trying to be a rooster. It has had a very large comb for a few weeks and this morning it has started to at least try crowing. It is kind of funny to watch it stretch out when it does it. It looks like...

Questions about Lethargic Hen with Limp Comb

I was worried she wasn't going to be alive this morning but she is still acting about the same, just super sluggish. We are keeping her in the house in a pet carrier. She isn't eating or drinking, except when we force some pedialyte down her. I have added a heat lamp at quite a distance just...

Questions about Lethargic Hen with Limp Comb

Well she seems to be getting worse. She didn't go up to the coop tonight so we grabbed her and put her in a crate in the house. We can't get her to eat but have been forcing small quantities of pedialyte down her. She seems to be layer slightly on her side too which seems odd.
