    opossum in hen house!

I research, as a horse owner at a large farm over 100 head, it was a concern. Was it equine encepelitus? turns out its really really difficult for a possum to transmit to equine. Horses do it themselves with or without possums. I can find the research to back, but not right now. :)

Electric is easy and cheap. I promise.

I see sad people, losing their pets, or their money birds....its crazy. You don't need the "expensive charger" , and you don't have to build a fort over it. I don't work for an electric fence co :) It just freaking works. NOT dangerous to chickens or people. fun project to set up...

First winter with chickens: others have me feeling guilty about not heating. Going to be -3 & -16

I felt awful too. Until I read how much healthier it was. I don't have worries of a fire. The chickens are perfectly cheerful. Happier than me being out there by 100%. They didn't like to walk in the first snow, so I put cardboard down. That was pooped to s... multiple times. I put...

Electric is the only way to keep chickens safe

So, I read more people surprised by predator losses. It makes me sad. For a family to have some chickens for pets, it is so easy to keep them safe. Of course option A is to dig underground to incorporate hardware mesh, or maybe pavers or stones, it's labor intensive and expensive and not...

Moving Forward- Breeding for Resistance to Marek's Disease

A little dirt don't hurt. A generality but, children from overly clean, pet free, food careful homes may develop terrible allergies and immune issues. My floors are sticky, have dogs, cats, eat (sometimes) with dirty hands. I don't worry, they are building strong immune systems. I don't...

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

They are being shipped in. from an NPIP certified flock. The page mentions requirements for tests and NPIP. I can't wrap my mind around who is going to check the documents? A postal worker? Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Oh, I gotcha. I figure, nature feeds nature. These are MY chickens. There does have to be a second barrier of some kind, IMHO it doesn't have to be sturdy, or a poultry net electric, which is pricey. The thing is...the thing doesn't run up and soar over the fence. (unless a deer...

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Why not electric wire? Or on the coop? It really works wonderfully. Its simple & cheap. No surprise losses - even after you kill whatever... more will come and you won't know they are back or if something new moved in until you have another loss. -A
