    Turkeys...starving? Dying, skin and bones

Okay, you hear that turkeys, especially young ones, are dumb. Are they dumb enough to not recognize food as food? Seriously. We started with two bourbon red chicks, then combined with another bourbon red (same source for all) and a slate. They did really well up to the last ten days, then...

    Growing fodder for chickens

HINT: For wire shelving and framing, hit the local metal scrap yards and recyclers. :) Cheap! and you can always build a wooden frame to put wire shelving on (that's what I'm doing with mine). As far as trays go--it was less expensive for me to hit WalMart and buy the Sterilite 16x23x5 or so...

    Show Me Your Feeders!!

The ingenuity I see around here never ceases to amaze me! Never! My flock of larger birds tends to really tear through the feed, although they're pretty diligent about cleaning up what they scatter, too. But the Seramas...oh, the Seramas! Looking for ways to provide feed that they CANNOT...

Great video and great idea! Wonder if anyone here has adobe bricks, or if I'll have to figure another way...I suppose it could work for rabbits as well, a shallow tray with either the brick or wood to sit on? Hmmm...The ice water was a huge hit, but when the day ended and I didn't refresh it...

    American serama thread!

For all those in the heat, how are your chickens doing? Mine have been so very hot :( and I'm very worried that I may lose some! Fans, misters, wetting them and the ground, we've done it all and I'm not telling how many times a day they get their water refreshed and cooled. Tomorrow, I try...

To Tame A Serama: First, find a treat they like; I use mealworms and boy do they get addicted FAST. Reward *every* time they do what you want, like coming to you. Eventually you get a Serama on your arm digging at your fingers for the next mealie! Second, put that bird in a small...

    Mealworm farming

I've had the best results pulling pupae from the bins and setting them to hatch in a nearly-empty box with a small carrot--removing newly emerged beetles daily and distributing them back to the beetle boxes. When I have left them to hatch in an 'all in one' bin, they often come out with...

    Counterweight Water Cup?

Some years back, I had a chance to use a water cup which had a small brass weight at the rear (the cup was white plastic); it connected to a water supply (rubber) hose. The principal was that as long as the cup was full, the tip of the portion with the weight was held up, blocking the water...

Sounds like you need to post some pictures of your 'terrible crossbreeds' here to get more opinions, hee hee!! :) As for her behavior at the show/fair, the barn super should be all OVER that kind of garbage; a friend of mine runs the poultry/rabbit barn at an OR fair and if you bring in an...

Why would you want to nip them off anyway? Let the plant do what the plant's gonna do; that way if something happens and the fruit fails, you have more. Besides, in general, when you prune something like that, they just branch off and grow like heck. Nature is a wonderful thing; LEAVE IT ALONE...

    Mealworm farming

I've been playing it safe since that gross little incident, and run mealies through my hand-crank grain/corn grinder with chick starter and very small seeded stuff like finch/canary seed and dove/quail mix. Makes a nice variety of sizes, and the mealies contribute all the goodies and NO risk...

Beetlemania folks....Don't spend the time trying to save each one. Trust me, there are LOTS of beetles in the world that mature just fine! Feed out the deformed ones and keep the ones that did well under your conditions. (And yes, I tried at first too...lol...harden your heart and cull!!)

...large fowl hens. :) All in, about fifty? Depends on who hatched what this morning... The rest are for beetles, to try and keep the whole thing *going* this winter--last winter I got cleaned out by a smartypants Serama hen that showed her mob where the Fountain Of MmmmYUM was! Many...

Go back to Page 1, there's a lovely list there. :) :) As for the respiratory issues...as long as you show some sense and wear a mask when you stir things up, I doubt there's a major issue. But speaking as someone now on an inhaler....start smart and just don't let it get established! Keep...

    Mealworm farming

I get my mealies from Rainbow Mealworms in California and love the result. Well packed and generously counted! Birds that will eat mealies: (http://audubon-omaha.org/bbbox/bbrp/mealworm.htm) Mealworms are easy to raise. Only a few basics need be followed to start and maintain a mealworm...

Poo balls aren't uncommon in my LF coop, darnit--they seem to enjoy walking in everyone else's fresh mushy poops, then in the dirt, and hey presto. Gotta keep up on them, since they are obviously uncomfortable. I use nail trimmers or small wirecutters with EXTREME care to gently chip the...

I think once you relax, they'll do a lot better--I'd rather use mealworms for training than try to sedate my birds. :)
