Our vet agreed Gleam had an ear infection, and took him away to clean it out (slightly disappointing to a gal who'd wanted to be an avian veterinarian). She prescribed meloxicam for the pain and Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim (SMZ/TMP) for the infection itself for 14 days, telling us to keep...
Thank you. The vet was able to get him an appointment tomorrow morning. He still has little appetite or energy after we cleaned his ears out last night, at least to the best of our ability. Poor guy probably couldn't hear a thing with all that polysporin in his ears!
He still seems very...
Thank you, we will try that tonight. He seemed a touch better this morning, and did at least enthusiastically eat the bit of scrambled egg I gave him.
We do have amoxicillin, yes, as well as enroflaxin.
My buddy Gleam is a 2 year old roo. Today he has been drowsy and lethargic, and when I picked him up for a closer look this afternoon, he had pale yellow gunk in his ears. When I gently scraped away at it it was white inside. My poor buddy was just half asleep in my arms! My husband found...
Ha, yes. The current girl in treatment, appropriately named Tabasco, immediately goes into "I am STRONG like an EAGLE!" mode the minute she sees her pill. You would never know she was hand-fed and took naps in my lap as a chick!
Thank you all so much.
@Eggcessive @coach723 Thank you both!
Anyone else have suggestions? I couldn't find a good post about just this topic, and hope this ultimately helps a lot of chicken keepers.
Any ideas? She isn't always keen on being tricked with even scrambled eggs. The spicy lady (half Buckeye) in question has zero wattles, and I don't doubt a lot of chicken keepers find themselves in a similar predicament. With what method(s) have you been successful?
Thank you, I'll start giving her the Calcium today.
She does have normal feed available right now, as well as a basic mash, just to encourage her.
Their last worming was June 21 (the first dose was June 11).
(Edit for misspelling)
My three year-old Black Copper Marans x Buckeye hen Tabasco was acting a bit lethargic this morning, with her beak open panting a bit (not dramatically, but it's not warm at all today, just muggy). I grabbed her and gave her not one, but two thorough goings-over with a flashlight.
I saw no...
...she didn't want any part of THAT. All six of those peeps were perfectly healthy and got to spend a few weeks in the brooder in the living room (I was very ill at the time and this made care easier for me physically), but you definitely want it ready to go *just in case*.
Good luck and have fun!
She seems more content—I took out the mash, then Paloma. A few minor scuffles, with one hen racing away from the boss lady and my roo breaking up a fight with a normally sweet Dominique (I picked up the latter twice to remove her from the scuffle, but my roo stepping in and chest-bumping her out...
...came at her (it's always the small cute ones...) and my roo broke up the fight, which calmed things down. Paloma now has an entire half of the run *and* the mash dish to herself. She ate a little, too! I'll have to bring her back in for a bit shortly due to an appointment, but this has to...
For reference on her case: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/wound-flystrike-can-this-chook-be-saved-graphic-photo.1670564/
Wednesday, I realized my five year-old EE hen Paloma had flystrike, and thanks to all the posts here, I was able to take immediate action to begin helping her and...
Well, I think Paloma has stopped eating. Even scrambled egg and treats cannot tempt her, but when I take her outside, she scratches most energetically and happily and eats greens. She tries to run around. She complains about being brought back inside. She even tidbitted over a couple of small...
@Eggcessive Sorry to ping you, but would Fish Mox 250 from an online aquarium shop work? Goodness, I cannot find the stuff fish keepers use anywhere (we are rural, and our vet is closed for the day), even the aquarium store!
