Ag no. I am so sorry to hear that. Christmas in the cold... under other circumstaces is great.... but this is just not nice. Hope you have a safe trip and hopefully you will get back before winter starts here ;o)
I started a vleisbook page for us kzn crazy garden chicken keepers. Go find it and join. I am trying to network as many like minded people in our province. "kzn garden chicken keepers" is the group name.
Hi teachnkids. Welcome!!! I also live south of Durban the availability of big breeds is rather minimal here, although I know someone who wants to rectify that. At the moment main breed to buy that is often readily available are rhode island reds and hylines. I have 4 rir girls.
The name is Maxine... but Max is fine. huge kudos to you Oz. I wouldn't have the patience or heart. But what a grand adventure. Think I am going to have to make myself part of the furniture here. Lol
mmm I was having more of a movie thought..... Neverending Story... especially the part at the end where he is reading a book alone in the dark and talking/shouting/screaming along with the story. and now i burst into song...."Reach the stars ...Fly a fantasy...Dream a dream....And what you see...
Finally.... another 6 days and i have read all 13014 posts. Good timing too a the 2am falling asleep phone in hand routine is flattening me. But wow what a ride.
Hahaha yes well... seems the southern hemisphere folk are always at odds when it comes to sport. 3rd in rugby wasn't bad though (behind NZ and Aus)... but we will get there one day.
I too was once a deserter and lived waaay up north on mud island (uk) but alas I suck at it and the pull to come...
Ok I have been reading this thread for a week now and I am only up to page 300... of 1292... I'm never going to catch up.

P.s greetings from South Africa.
I can finally say 4 out of 4! woohoo!
After the laying issue I had with Madam Poppy being eggbound with her first 2 eggs (epsom salt steam bath and lubrication sorted that out) she has given me an egg a day since for 7 days now. Shes a machine! lol
I understand. It's difficult. With my Poppy (RIR) I felt her egg 5 days ago and as she wasn't in distress I left it as she kept going to the box and as this is my first experience having back yard chickens I didn't have a clue. Only when I felt 2 did I think I had to do something. Still she...

Well that was an interesting couple of days. Poppy and I got really intimate. Realised quite quickly she was struggling to lay her first egg and as she's my lap bird I felt 2 eggs in her. After 2 days of her trying to lay I trawled this site and did as suggested.... A calcium intake, a steam...
well none so far today.. but I think my favourite is having trouble with hers. She has spent 5 hours (Frfriday and sunday each) in the nest box panting and straining and nothing. Eating, drinking, walking and pooping well but nothing..... I felt her up this morning I could swear she has 2 inside...
Hello all. Ok I am confused. The girls started laying 2 days ago. 2 small eggs under their roost, nothing yesterday and again a small egg under roost this morning. That's good (although nest box would be better). My concern is over madam poppy she went into nest box 2 days ago for 4 hrs and...
