Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Sorry for the insanely long post! The basic is this first sentence: I didn’t see what happened yesterday after the early morning because I was gone all day, but today Hazel decided she was taking herself totally out of the picture and stayed in the coop all day. Weather may have played a role...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Could he have injured a foot or leg at his previous home, or had his feet feathers picked at there that would account for less use or an off gait, and it is feeling better now?

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I’ll second @RoyalChick. I started looking at higher protein levels than ordinary feed in preparations for my first chickens, Buckeyes, which are supposedly a “heritage” breed. (They are, but what you actually get in day old chicks from hatcheries is another story). Conservancy groups and...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

So thinking about Bob’s Niamh’s roosting I was reminded of the Roovolution podcast episode I just listened to. Have you heard these theories or research? I have heard only some. What do you think of this information? First claim, that one eye is nearsighted and the other farsighted. You will...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Yes, and in my observations, even when Hazel thumped him a little, she did not like the confrontation and kept it to a minimum. She didn’t reinforce it much with a chase.

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

They can see a whole lot better now, true. I don’t think they look half-bad, though they are quite different from how they were. You always said you wanted a couple of Pavlovskayas!

Not sure what you mean here? He could easily get one alone and run after her but he doesn’t. Tedi is not very fast. But even a lone BO can step toward him and he’ll move off. Not sure how they’re pulling that off with him but he doesn’t try with them at all these days.

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Am on the road now pulled over to eat some dinner. No I didn't sense any accusation from you at all, only sympathy and personal opinion, and not as a directive either. Just your take on it in a very sympathetic way. Ideas of what's going on - Hazel is Queen, so there was an idea floated how...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Exactly my thoughts. I am going to check her either late today or tomorrow, as I'm gone for the rest of the day and will try to get some. I wonder if it would make it more comfortable for her even if she is not losing much feathers yet? I do see a fluff under-feather sticking out here and there...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Poor Mini! How tragic. You can’t easily know what’s going on. Wouldn’t a major operation like a hysterectomy be a really big deal, maybe not even survivable? Do people do them on birds these days?

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

The new Buckeyes have been getting 20% all flock and treats of layer pellets from the Bigs’ feeder, and what’s in there is the last of the 20% layer feed, now I’m mixing the all flock in there. Will see how the BO’s do on that, they are still laying well. Hazel is not, and of course the new...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Maybe you can ask your vet for a Terramycin script or have them sell it to you, it was great in Hazel’s eyes.

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I’m concerned now that she is attacked / harassed by one or two pullets also, they will block her escape and then pile on while Shehnai does his business and chase and peck her afterwards too. There’s no blood drawn yet that I see, but it’s distressing to watch. It’s a lot for her to deal with...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Theoretically true, but none of the tests I’ve ever had done have shown anything, much less MG. Yet I know there has been something respiratory with Hazel, though maybe it’s just her own particular sensitivity to dust and stress? But Annie was seriously sick with something at one time too, and...

Wow it wasn’t stepping on a foot in the pasture, it was on the stone floor, so how is the silkie okay?

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Poor Eli-too! I'm sorry for her and you, there's a lot on your plate going on, just in your flock! What breed is she? Forgot to mention also it was either Peanut or Hazel for her bubbly eyes who also had a throat swab and blood drawn when they were there for Peanut's distended belly, and those...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I also suspect MG in the group here due to Hazel's bubbly eyes and Annie & Tedi's illness, but haven't been able to verify it either way. Annie swabbed negative for anything, but that was after antibiotic treatment. You may recall I've had Hazel's eyes swabbed twice, before any treatment, and...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Hazel "Hottie Hazel" update Seeing Hazel all upset while getting chased and tackled by Shehnai has been hard but it might be happening less. Possibly now there’s some better news - Hazel is figuring out strategies, and maybe, just maybe, Shehnai is also learning the ropes and acting a little...
