Chris McCary is on the Buckeye breeder list found on the link in my signature, at the top of the list (in Alabama). He is also active on the Buckeye facebook group if you do Facebook and a link to that is on the bottom right of the page.
I have had some Buckeyes that lay darker eggs but most seem to veer towards the lighter side of brown. Buckeyes have the best personality of any breed I have ever had, plus great for both eggs and meat. Nothing to not like about them :)
There has been a handful of cases in the last ten years or so, most from wild game like wild boar and bear. The chance of getting it back in 2009 was something like 1 in 154 million and that was from all sources wild game included. Commercial pork is not allowed to be fed raw garbage any longer...
I have no problem with raw pork. I think the usual fear is of trichinosis, but its a non issue in pork in the u.s that is commercially grown. I don't feed much of it only because my dog isn't super fond of it. I have friends that feed a lot of pork roast because it is super cheap in their area.
I do think it's good to hear both pros and cons. I've seen some scary poor diets being fed and these are the ones that turn the vets against home prepared diets. Heck I'm not a vet and they scare me. Raw feeders need to research canine nutrition so they have some idea of what constitutes a...
I have several freezers and buy in bulk from a local meat processing plant, raw dog food co-op, I watch for sales for the cheaper cuts like pot roast, boneless round steak and stock up. I order some things online from http://www.hare-today.com/ like green tripe, beef lung, whole rabbits. Beef...
Yes, my dog will eat the entire chicken, legs head etc included except for the intestines. I keep some whole butchered just for the dog, pretty much just drain the blood in a killing cone and freeze whole. I usually pluck older birds but younger smaller ones will leave the feathers on. She also...
I prefer to snip a v in the web with a teeny pair of scissors; he may do something like that? I found out by accident that I preferred the scissors, couldn't find my toe punch after a hatch and liked it so much better I stuck with it. In the past I didn't do the hole punch up in the web, I did...
I like to see it early. Here is a comparison shot of 2 different lines of Buckeyes, exact same age. I wanted to compare a different lines rate of growth and egg laying ability against my own birds a couple years ago so I bought some hatching eggs from another breeder. I hatched them in the same...
Hmm don't believe I said a word about heritage. He asked for someone with Buckeyes that had 3 qualities: Meaty, good layers and will hatch their own young. The person I mentioned has Buckeyes with all three of those qualities. Not every line of Buckeyes has all three of those qualities, but...
Chris McCary is who you are looking for. His birds cover all three things you are looking for. You will find him on the breeder's list in my signature.
Congrats to you friend! Nice to be validated by two different judges on the same day. Doesn't always happen that way at a double show so he must have been a really nice bird to have both judges select him.
Hurrah! There's been many a time I watch the tracking and am waiting at the p.o when the truck pulls in. It is nerve wracking waiting for chicks; you want them cozy at home as quick as possible lol.
I love chicks hatched in April. It gets warm enough to let them outside after they have some...
chickadoodles, I have personal experience with birds from Chris and Laura is absolutely correct, you won't be disappointed. I have yet to come across a line that lays or produces for the table better, and though he doesn't show as often as others, his record there when he does show speaks for...
I've had very good luck butchering Buckeyes at around 8 weeks for 'game hen' sized carcasses. They are great just split up the back and flattened down for grilling or oven.
