I'm not really sure what breeder they came from but I purchased them at Tractor Supply Co. in the bantam bin.

I purchased my silkies from TSC over a year ago. Believe it or not, none have gone broody so far, they lay a good amount of eggs and they're not as low ranking in the flock like I thought they would be - pretty bossy chickens! I'm giving 3 stars because they didn't turn out as I expected. I feel...

FEBRUARY Hatch-A-Long 2015:Please Read First Post To Join H-A-L

Turkeys were a bit more challenging. I brought home 6 poults, the biggest one died at 3 months, just put on too much weight too fast I guess. Necropsy was fine. I gave them tons of cayenne powder in their food & water to keep the blackhead away... They lived harmoniously with the chickens until...

...even develop embryos. I stored them in the garage & wasn't very good at turning them. We've had crazy hot/cold weather this winter. Last week we had weather ranging from 78*F all the way down to 15*F... so I'm not expecting that many to hatch honestly, which is why I set so many eggs in the...

Pros and Cons for using sand

I live in east nc - about 45 minutes from the coast - the only problem I may have with sand is it washing away. We have our chickens & goats in the back corner of the yard; because it's the farthest away from all our neighbor's houses. Unfortunately it is at the end of a slope & lots of water...

Pros and Cons for using sand

I will look into the coarse sand, I thought washed concrete was it, I'll have to make sure though.

Pros and Cons for using sand

Yeah, it's hot & humid with mild winters here. Rarely do we get snow & it isn't much. I think one time we got 8 ft but that was decades ago

Is this the last egg to hatch?

    Help! dried membranes

Still looks a little pink, needs more time to thin out & get more white, imo. Also looks like a thick membrane & maybe that's why the chick had trouble. You can keep it moist like you have been. Hatch day is hard to get any sleep, but if you must, maybe put a wet paper towel on the chick -...

Pros and Cons for using sand

Wow really? :( I have been considering on getting some washed concrete sand for my chicken run because I deal with bumble foot every single year & the run gets very muddy while it rains. The LAST thing I want is for it to stink & overwhelm my chickens with cocci.

    Help! dried membranes

I've had to keep the membrane moist for just about all day for the chick to hatch on it's own. One time, I did help hatch one (successfully) but it had a real weird deformed abdomen - like the yolk was on one side, & it was really weak. I ended up getting my husband to put it down, something we...

    Fowl pox?

Newbie here... I noticed one of my poults had these small bumps around it's eyes. I noticed it a week ago & it has not changed. The others do not have bumps. What is it & what should I do? I feed them 24% protein feed & water with vitamins & electrolytes. They're 3 weeks old. I have them...

    APRIL Hatch a long ......Anyone?

Oh no, :hugs Assisting a hatch takes a lot of energy. Makes me give more respect the chicks that actually do it on their own & survive. You must be exhausted! Great pics, love the macros! Such cuties <3
