Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Ok, already moved due to other chickens wanting to get in on the next box action. Mom seems fine but one unforseen difficulty is she took a HUGE nasty poop almost right on her chick when I put her in the new nest box. Ha. She still seems to want to sit on the egg that probably isn't good, and...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Alright so my girl hatched out 5 of her 6 eggs so far. First one was yesterday morning. There is still one egg with no pip. Question: what are the ways I can tell if the remaining egg is any good? I would like to move her tonight after I get home from work (which will be about 11PM), so maybe if...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

2 questions: 1. I placed eggs under my broody on Thu. the 12th of July in the afternoon. Most people seem to say broody chickie eggs hatch sooner, so does that mean probably they will be hatching on Wed. afternoon? (20 days later) 2. My broody is in a mobile next box, and she is still in the...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I got these three leghorns a while ago from a guy that was leaving for military duty. I don't think he really fed them but ANYWAY, these things seem like great foragers but in term of the foods I give them they are driving me nutso! They will not leave it alone and have bulging crops in the...

Question about adding new chickens to flock

Yeah I thought with more than one it might be ok. I will have to see what I can do, I just don't feel like fencing off an are inside of their coop is very reasonable and outside of the coop I would be more worried about coyotes at night (main pred. here).

Question about adding new chickens to flock

I have 5 chickens, and I would like to get some more 5 month+ chickens. I would love to add them directly to the same coop and am wondering if I get more than 5 if my old ones will raise hell with the new ones. Is there any way to integrate successfully without having to build an introduction coop?

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Why do you say that? Curious because I don't have dogs but someday I would like a guard dog. Total dog newb. Question: How often do your birds have poop stuck to their fluffy butts? I have had a couple with literal clumps and some with just some on feathers. A couple of mine do have really...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I had a batch that went bad, too. I think it was high pH, I had two buckets going but one had less ACV in it and that one went bad :( waste of food but I am loving the FF so far.

...box), I put her in a cat carrier with bedding and left it in the coop (I realize now I should have put it outside of the coop and kept it dark. ****). Anyway, she was standing up this morning and when I open the cat carrier door she hopped right out. The other chickens saw the 3 falsies in...

Would like an opinion of whether to get a stool sample

I wanted to update this thread. I got the stool sample and had roundworms so the vet said to worm with nemex. I did so and the two got worse, not better. One just died yesterday and the other is not doing well. The one that is still alive but is doing poorly can not walk, and the one that died...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

My feed is a paste-like consistency, not totally submerged in water anymore because of how much it soaked up. Will it get moldy if I leave it like that? I am wondering weather I should throw it into another bucket and submerge it. I just don't want to lose all of that feed, but I am happy with...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I'm starting my ferment today. It has scratch, layer, and flax seed. I covered it with water and added whey and ACV. We will see how they like it tomorrow or the next day. I'm sure they will love it.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I am going to start doing this. Can I just use 1 bucket and use a scoop with holes? Will it be a problem if it just stays in there? I think what I want to do is do a 2 bucket system, ferment one and then when it's half gone start up the next with a bit of the first, use up the first and then...

    Homestead/Redlands Fl

I don't know much, but from what I've heard guinea fowl are actually much better to keep ticks at bay, so you may want to get those (or at least some).

Would like an opinion of whether to get a stool sample

I think I hate this vet, but hopefully he gave me ok info on the nemex. He does specificially do birds, so I dunno. I wormed them today giving droppers with 1 mL nemex/bird. I won't be eating the eggs for a while. I hope they get better.

Would like an opinion of whether to get a stool sample

So I got the positive and think I am going to worm. I can't just watch two of them die (no processing tools right now, no way to humanely kill). The vet recommended nemex. Should I use that rather than the one that kills them all, valbazen? How can I make sure they eat it all, and eat it all...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Actually, I got mine from a local breeder and they were $15-20 each :( I wanted hers because she fed all organically. The chickens really did seems great, until all of this happened.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

No the video was the first day that the white one displayed anything and the black and white has been off for a few weeks. I'm starting to wonder if the black and white one is ok now because the white one is just so bad off, so by comparison she seems ok. My chickens are normally CRAZY. When...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

And here is the lovely present I just saw the white one deliver: doesn't look great, eh? This is much different poop than the others that I had had issues with, which is why I'm suspecting it's something different. I would just think if she was egg bound even someone inexperienced like me...
