Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Hi! This is a great idea, and got me to check back in! We lost our remaining old girls last spring to a stupid weasel (including my 8yr old hen who sirvived bear attack!). We've missed having the birds though and are planning on getting some more once we rethink our coop, and finish up some...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Ok everybody! The moment we've been waiting for! Our girl is back with the remaining members of her crew! We tried putting her in her own run for a gradual reintroduction, but she was having none of it. She hopped the fence and is right back in the mix. I've seen no squabbling. She did roost a...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Thanks so much! It took a while for me to get a full body picture for you! I kept forgetting. I had given her a bit of a break from the q tip/vetericyn/ointment cleanings this week. (My daughter broke her leg :( so that obviously took my attention) but I took these pictures tonight after...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

For reference the first picture is tonight before I spritzed clean with vetericyn, and the final picture is after cleaning her up. Some scab came out and its healthy and nice underneath. Theres still scab on the inside nooks and such inside. I am only using a q tip at this point. In the last...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Hello all. I'm going to try to get a picture later tonight, but I've stopped packing her gash. It's about as dep as the head of a q-tip now, and the opening is smaller around than that. The scabbing on the I side of it is lifting up and close to wanting to come out. The new feather pins around...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

I agree! It exciting, and amazing. Every day the gash hole is smaller and smaller. I think I'm just waiting for that one. Our rooster is a tiny bantam guy. So as long as shes healed up enough for him, and that it stays clean. Its finally started to seem not as deep, but I'm still packing it. I...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Thanks for checking in! I've taken pictures a few times, but then when I get to posting I swear the wounds have healed and changed more. I feel shes been healing "quickly" this whole time. All things considered, but now it's just amazing. I think we are in the final stretch, and I can see the...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

I would say she is getting as untamed as ever. I will say since she is my oldest it isnt like she's never been handled. She just certainly does not prefer it and will get away of she can. I burrito wrap her in a towel and clean her up one wound at a time from side to side.

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

So my photography skills are limited, but today was an exciting day in my little chicken rehab world. She is tolerant but fiesty as I've mentioned, and has been diligent in pulling off her bandages. So today after I applied more ointment amd wrapped her up I put her outside. This afternoon my...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Photos from tonight's bandage change: This one above is the hole that connects to the gash. I'm still packing this one a bit. Just the part that goes up and into the gash. The one above is the gash today after I pulled out the packing. It's not as wide open as it was, and I can tell it is...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

I appreciate the congratulations. My in laws were certainly horrified when I said I needed to bring the injured chicken with me to visit or else we couldnt come! But they agreed so shes even gotten a bit of a vacation out of this ordeal! Ps. She travels very well! I have a good set up for...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

This mornings poo pictures included so we can all see what her normal are looking like. In addition to some of our coop. I'm doing this post from my phone so it's a bit out of order but I hope you get the idea. She is eatting enough now that I can feel some in her crop before bedtime, and her...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

The thick layer over/in the gash came off last night. I knew it was getting close. Alot less nooks and crannies and healed up so much under. It still looked a bit raw to me, but not bleeding... so I made sure I was a bit liberal with the ointment and packed it good with the gauze, and tried to...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Update as of last night... my hen is much more active. She has a ton of pin feathers coming in. All of the more minor wounds and scraping has healed up and now I'm down to the 3 biggest ones. Under her wing, above the tail gash and puncture on her side. We went away this past weekend, and I took...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Yes I will.probably keep her inside till the wounds look pretty much healed and then do a bit of a gradual reintroduction. She has really been a trooper. Like I said in a previous post she isnt one who would make a good "house chicken". Shes my oldest and will come for treats and such but isnt...

Help bear attack... should I euthanize?

Today was a busy day so I didnt get to put her outside. She spent most of yesterday outside though, and all her friends hung out around her crate dust bathing. She stretched out and played in the sun too, ate weeds, and pecked around. I've had to keep using wrap on her to hold the gauze on cause...
