Rooster tying to kill one hen.

Why is my Rooster singling out one of my hens from our flock of 10 to kill her. She is a black Australorp and I have 3 younger ones that look almost identical to her. She eats & drinks as usual, poop looks fine and she lays an egg 5 out of 7 days. I can see nothing wrong with her. She is a...

    Mice in chicken coop

We suddenly have both mice and rats. I am beside myself how to deal with the rats. We have trapped and killed a couple of the rats. The mice are more easily dealt with. Any suggestions that have worked that won't harm the chickens.

Topic of the Week - Lice and Mites - Prevention and Treatments

Thank you Mary, my main concern with the spray or powder being on the floor is them scratching around eating left over feed that they find. Especially the 11 day old chicks. Is this not a problem? Is there a specific dry product brand you would use on the floor? When you say don't over...

These stupid mites make me feel like such a failure. I've lost my 3 top favorites this summer. I said brown mites in my previous post but I meant to say red. I need to treat the coop again. I have permethrine to spray with but it's cold and rainy here now and I worry about a wet coop. What...

He passed away a couple of days ago. He started doing better and then took a turn and went down hill fast. Broke my heart.

He's dry but hubby won't let me bring him in because of the mites. And it is chilly outside. I was planning to put him in the shed which I think is a bad idea for him and for the bedding that's stored in there. I might just reintroduce the mites after we've sprayed them.

I'm not 100% certain. I bathed him as well as I could. I tried to make sure all areas were well rinsed and covered with water

I am still battling those horrible brown mites. The little beggars are back after 2 months mite free. At least I thought we were. In the beginning (late spring) I sprayed with permethrin and then again 2 weeks later and all the chickens vents as well. 6 weeks later we noticed them again so...

OXINE seems fabulous. Users please share usage, dosage, storage, etc.

There is an old time remedy using "sweet bleach". 1tsp - 1Tbl bleach plus a small amount of sugar to make it palatable in a gallon of fresh water for 3 days. This is to help with digestive troubles and fungal infections. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent measurement for using Oxine in...

3 week old chicks have mites! What do I do??

I'm happy to see some feed back on Seven dust. You just never know when you read something, even if it's from several people. I usually end up doing tons of research but have never had a reason to with this product. If my hubby and I were the only ones eating the eggs then it would worry me...

3 week old chicks have mites! What do I do??

I have been told by more than one person that the reason seven dust is not approved for poultry is because you can never eat the eggs again (ever). So I would do some serious research before using it.

Hen's feces doesn't look digested, full of grass - Advice?

I've never seen my chickens have poop this undigested. Maybe someone else on here has experienced this. As far as the grit is concerned, they should always have free choice grit. You are asking for digestive or crop issues otherwise. I also offer my hens free choice oyster shell. My flock...

3 week old chicks have mites! What do I do??

If they are actually mites then they will be in their current habitat now. This could also be where they originated.

3 week old chicks have mites! What do I do??

If you see them then you already have a serious infestation. I fought these beasts for weeks using natural methods. I finally gave in to using insecticide. The only thing that worked for me was Permethrin. You need to clear and throw away all bedding out of the coop and nest boxes. Aiso...

Hen's feces doesn't look digested, full of grass - Advice?

Does your flock have access to free choice grit? Please give more details about the poop. For example, is it solid or is it watery with green matter?

Do you know where I can find dosage amount for ivermectin. Someone told me 2 - 3 drops on the back of the the neck at the base for my rooster but they didn't ask if he was small or large. Just can't seem to find that information. I have a wide range of age and size birds.
