Calculating dosage of Safeguard (Fenbendazole) pellets for flocks

A bird may not get enough if it is not eating normally - because it is ill, broody, or bullies are interfering. Mixing the medicine with enough food for several days (5 days or a week is commonly recommended) and using sufficient amounts of the medicine should provide enough for all. The...

Calculating dosage of Safeguard (Fenbendazole) pellets for flocks

...= 150 mg fenbendazole 3. Calculate the dose for the flock If you have both large and small birds, add up the total weight of the flock (see * below). However, you can just calculate the dose for the large birds and dial it back a bit. The small birds eat a lot less, so take they care of the...

Review by 'zeppley' in article 'Feeding Ducklings Medicated Feed - The Myths and the Truth'

I trust Holderread and Metzger's findings - HOWEVER - there is good reason to be concerned about thiamine deficiency in waterfowl. Ducks and geese require twice as much thiamine as do chickens [1]. Medicated chick feed given as the ONLY food risks thiamine deficiency two ways. 1) unmedicated...

    Not Emergency - Foot Issues

I've had great luck just putting a few drops of pour-on ivervectin on a cotton ball and rubbing it on their legs once - works great for cochins/faverolles & other feather-footed varieties. People use this on their feather-hocked horses, too. Be sure and spray the wood and cracks in the coop...

what kind of growth is this, please help

That's good to know. I'm glad your hen is doing well. I took in a neighbor's unwanted duck with a similar problem. The duck has a long (1 1/4 inches long x 3/4 inches wide) cylindrical growth just outside her vent. After some research, I figure it is a feather cyst. In addition to the cost...

EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

It doesn't look like a parasite, or a parasite egg to me. I can't really tell the magnification of the photo. If low mag, it could be a tiny, nasty seed. If high mag, it could be a shell from some microscopic freshwater critter (see examples below) or a structural part of a plant.

Topic of the Week - Deworming chickens

...is that your animals will never be parasite-free unless you keep them in a box and only feed them cooked things (oh - like we do when raising chicks*). Healthy animals' immune systems will keep parasites in check. Here are the recommendations - many are opposite of worming lore -don't...

    Going weak and dieing.. why?

I know what you're going through. Consider grabbing the ones you see pooping blood and giving them an oral dose in addition to the feed. I HATE parasites.

    Going weak and dieing.. why?

The toltrazuril tastes slightly sweet so should be OK in the feed. I prefer to put it down their gullets so I know that all got their dose. If you are only giving them 0.3 mls and you can separate them, you can put it on bread and feed it to them one at a time. This does not work in a scrum...

    Going weak and dieing.. why?

Glad no bloody poop today. x2 on the coccidiosis! I bring my glasses and a flashlight for poop inspection every morning. I haven't had loses in a few months now - knock wood. I attribute that to the toltrazuril, probiotics (I'm using Probios in their water), switching to deep litter...

    Going weak and dieing.. why?

Oops, I cross posted myself. Too sleepy. Don't use my dosages until I can recalculate when I'm fresh. Yep, when I dose little chicks it can go flying - that's why I put vitamins in their water. Older birds are easier as there is more to hang on to. I grab the bird and tuck it into my...

    Going weak and dieing.. why?

For 25 chicks I'd hold each one and put the dose down their throat using a needleless tuberculin syringe. If that seems too daunting, do an experiment. Merck Veterinary Manual says the dose for drinking water is 25 ppm (parts per million). Make the dilution and see if it will stay in solution...

    Histomoniasis? Warning necropsy pics

For the record, birds don't get Trichuris (whipworms), only Capillaria (hairworms or threadworms). So if you see one of these in fecal flotation or wet mount, it's a Capillaria egg.

    Impacted cloaca

These obstructions are called cloacaliths, fecaliths, uroliths, or coproliths. They can occur as a result of many different conditions - fungal infections causing granulomas, kidney conditions, etc. Caught early you can dissolve and remove them, caught late, surgery is the only option for removal.

    Histomoniasis? Warning necropsy pics

I'm pretty sure problem was coccidiosis. I don't think it was histomoniasis given that the liver showed no lesions. I just found a photo from a necropsy of a chicken with coccidiosis (Eimeria tenella). It's ceca looked just like the ones above - full of caseous material. Often this material...

    Doing Fecal Floats at Home

This may be an artifact. I can't find any cysts/eggs that look like this and are this small. This was the only cyst/egg I found. Here's a similar photo - of an artifact! This is from p. 44 of Sloss et al. 1994. Veterinary Clinical Parasitology. Sixth ed. Iowa State University Press. This...
