I did this when I used to grow collards in summer. It works well! When planted in spring they will grow all summer, fall and winter. Those plants would get huge. Collards are a bug magnet in summer so now I just plant them late summer. I've keep a check but hardly any bugs in the garden now...

This is me! Been right here all my life. That accent and all. I find once I take them out of the pot, most of the salt is left in the broth. Broth is known as "pot likker". When I chop them I usually add more black pepper but little if any salt. Ham hock can vary in saltiness. Some people...

Chilly here too. It's looking like fall. The gum trees scattered among the pines are looking golden. Something, oaks?, showing a little red and brown. And the rain! Yay! What a blessing! It has been dry so long. Nice slow soaking rains too! :celebrate

...plant 1-2 rows of leaves go in my harvest pan. Then I move to the next plant and on and on until I have some for the chickens and some to cook. **I always leave the bud and a few leaves around the bud to continue to grow. You then can hill up soil or add compost around the stem. It will...

Still doing a little gardening here too. I think I've had a bit of a cold through the weekend so been moving slowly. Feeling on the mend now but still have the sniffles. Over the weekend got another pan of butterbeans picked. Pretty much picked the vines clean. Calling them done for the year...

    Stormcrow's Hobby Farm

Sounds very similar to what we started with many years ago. Sandy in places and clay in others. This area was completely under the ocean all those thousands of years ago. Lots of shells and sharks teeth found when our wells were dug. It takes time to get a good base built up and $$$. We don't...

Ever heard of a "drag harrow" ? You can also make one from a section of heavy wired fencing, chain link works well. Must add weight to the home made version. You can pull with a tractor, 4-wheeler, lawn mower, etc. Here granite gravel is mostly used for driveways. Over time, those pesky ruts...

Sometimes Mother Nature is sneaky! We got down to 39f Thursday night. I had to move several potted plants into the house or greenhouse. My plumeria are now in the living room blooming and smelling good. It's warmer now but have to keep up with the weather. In the garden I have cabbage and...

I believe this. Sneaky way to do business. The vegetable seed I save currently are all OP. In the past I have saved a few hybrid tomatoes. Most seemed the same exept for one. It appeared to get smaller fruit after a couple years. I eventually found other types we liked better so I scrapped...

Butterbeans are still producing. I also have a bunch of dried beans for eating and saving for next year's seed. I dug the volunteer Red Norland potatoes. Annual Vinca I started from saved seed last winter. They have grown and bloomed in the yard all summer with very little water. They love...
