When it was first suggested that chickens enter REM sleep and may dream there was some very stiff resistance to the idea. After all, we wouldn't want chickens demonstrating such things now would we. We might have to reconsider how we've been treating them for thousands of years.:p
Do they close their eyes or just the second eyelid? Chickens have three eyelids; a transparent one that moves from side to side (a wiper lid that keeps the eyeball clean and moist) a second lid that closes from the bottom of the eye upwards and the main lid that closes from the top of the eye...
I try not to touch the eggs at all. I don't understand why anyone would want to candle eggs that a broody hen is sitting on. They may explode in an incubator; I wouldn't know, I don't use them. In 25 years of chicken tending I've never had an egg explode under a broody hen.:lau
I haven't counted the number of joins in either coop, but I will.
There are no mite eggs on the vent. Those white dots are not mite eggs. If they were, they would hatch and be gone a week or so later. That mess around the adjustable vent has been there for months.:D
What is there is a...
One hour and a bit today. Got had over by the clocks changing again.
A bit of light rain but not enough to prevent Mow, Sylph and Glais getting onto the field for an hour.
Moulting progress. Sylph is handling her moult rather well so far. She isn't losing primary feathers yet, but she avoids get...
Firstly, a plastic coop will not stop an infestation of red mite. What it will do is making eradicating the pest a lot easier. As Perris has mentioned in this thread, red mite don't live on the bird, they live in the coop and feed on the birds at night while they are roosting. One does find red...
I think chickens have mastered the art of half conscious activity. From my observations they do not fully wake when they poop. I believe this from watching chickens in the nest box in my house in Catalonia. It's also how I found out they snore and fart.:D
Yup, normal within a range. As mentioned, bad weather, old age, moulting, can all make chickens decide early bed is advisable. Henry, for an example, in his final year often went to roost half an hour before the rest.
From my observations I think this is how it works. I've rarely noticed tribe members concerned about the loss of junior members or chicks; not even mums who have lost chicks as long as they have at least one chick left to care for.
As one might expect, long term members who have established...
There isn't much point in worrying about it because there isn't really anything you can do about it. If she's strange, she's strange. As long as she's taking care of her chick, if she happens to behave like a complete nutter in the process take pictures/videos.
It isn't that unusual for hens to...
I would never, ever, rely on an app to properly identify mushroom types. To do so, is, not just in my opinion but in the opinion of expert mushroom foragers, an invitation for a potentially life threatening disaster.
Where I lived in Catalonia, mushroom foraging was extremely popular. Every year...
If you are concerned about permethrin spray ( be aware that it's highly toxic to aquatic life as well as cats) then sulfur powder will deal with lice without any toxicity issues.
About two and a half hours this afternoon. I couldn't describe the afternoon as dry because everything is damp from the downpours yesterday and overnight. But, it didn't rain this afternoon and the sun shone.🌞
Sylph so far isn't looking as distressed as her sister Mow did when she had her first...
