Hello
My five day old Jersey Giant chick keeps opening her mouth like she's yawning with every breath. She has no discharge and isn't making any noises. She keeps trying to sleep but whenever her head is lower than her body she jerks it up and flips out; I think she can't breathe when it's...
I bought four Red Sex Link hens for my flock three years ago. One has died every year, and two died this year. It was very upsetting because they had quickly become my favorites. They were all very sweet and loved to be pet. They all presumably died of the same thing, but I'm not sure what it...
Hello!
So, I am very excited to say that I have wild wood ducks nesting in a dead oak on my property.
However, the tree is right on the edge of my yard, next to my driveway. I'm worried that when the ducklings leave they nest they will land on the concrete instead of the grass next to it and...
I'm so upset.
My parent just now told me that one of my hens has been sick for THREE DAYS and has not been eating or drinking since then.
My mom said that she found my hen (Nyac) upside down in the run, being pecked by another hen. My mom took her out and put her in a separate coop, and then...
When I was in seventh grade I was in a homeschool co-op. One of my classes was animal science and anatomy. So one girl in my class brought in an egg she found at a lake. She said she was trying to hatch it. I asked if she had an incubator, and she said, "What's that? I keep in in a basket with a...
The eggs/chicks would be fine under the mother, but of course the yen is a problem. Do you know the exact temperature in the basement? (Especially at night)
Hello everyone! This is Gylfie:
She's a little sweetie. She's three years old, and still lays every day!
I was wondering if anyone thought she could be a good show bird. If no, could you tell me why? (bad conformation, any disqualifying features, ect.)
Here are a few more pics, all taken...

(Thanks for being a good sport on the condition of that post, I was using that thing were you talk and it turns to text, and I didn't realize what it looked like..)
And yes, in the case of my hens I only caught them actually picking each other a few times, and River my red star had almost no...
Update!
Nyac has been gaining strength since two days into her illness. She's slowly been going back uphill since then, and today I decided she was good enough to go outside with her flock mates for a few minutes supervised. Of course there are a couple skirmishes because she's been gone so...
It may be cat. My old cat Poppy used to catch birds and rabbits and he'd chew the head and feet off. He was always afraid of my hens, though. I'm very sorry for your loss.
Open her mouth and check in her throat. If there's weird looking yellow bumps in there it could be wet pox. As for throwing up and not eating could you try tube feeding her a little bit of Pedialyte?
Do you have any other chickens? I had have a problem kind of like that and it turned out one of my hens was picking out the others feathers. If it were mites or lice, you might be able to see them in her feathers. Lice are little white things, and mites are smaller and black.
Your local feed store may have some baby bird food that will be good for her. Pedialyte is good for her and does wonders for her hydration, but in less she's had it regularly I would recommend diluting it slightly.
By the way , there's the thread Justplainbatty mentioned...
:hugs I'm so sorry for your loss. As for introducing another flock mate, I found you can do that anytime you need to. Here's a good article on it: http://www.mypetchicken.com/backyard-chickens/chicken-help/How-do-I-introduce-new-chickens-into-my-old-flock-H128.aspx
I've found Vetricin can work wonders. It doesn't if you get it and ears or eyes. It's also non-toxic. I've also heard that hairspray can help them from getting picked on again. That and bitter apple spray. When the other chickens peck them they hate the taste.
