Deep Litter Feedback with Chickens & Ducks?

I live in Kentucky, have been using Depp Litter for past 2 years. I have 11 hens no ducks in a 8x30 enclosure made up of a coup 8x8 and a run of 8x22. The entire enclosure has a depth of approximately 11 to 12 inches of decomposed wood chips, grass clippings, garden debris, leaves, small twigs...

    Sick Hen

Maybe someone can be of help, I have a 3 year old New Hampshire Red hen that has started showing what appears to be white diarrhea . I have separated her from the rest of the flock and given her Corid in her water. She is eating good and seems not to be in any pain, she also has no problem...

Less Eggs but No Idea WHY

I would think most likely they have a hidden nest that possibly you haven't found or predators have found first. I believe you would have to confine them, hopefully in a large run for weeks to retrain. I had to give up free range because of predators and the egg search problem. As you might know...

    Predator proofing

Great looking coop. I too would put wire on outside of post, also would suggest if possible add a electric wire at bottom 4-5 inches up and one at top to stop climbing predators. Good luck to you.

Are these brooder panels too short?

brewfarm, for me there are lots of unanswered questions in your post, how many chicks are you brooding, are you providing heat, what size is your coop, how many hens are in your coop. I would suggest you go to the forums for info on brooding new chicks, there is a wealth of info there. Good luck...

    Im a rookie please advice

You might try to replace heat bulb with a 150 watt bulb. A lot depends on how much or any your chicks have feathered out. Also if you change bulbs or reduce heat observe your chicks if they are spread out in the brooder they are fine if they are huddled they need heat you can adjust accordingly...

    Chronic shell-less egg layer

I wouldn't think her age would be a factor, at 2 years old she should still have several years of productivity left. I agree with aart try the steps he recommended being she is the only one with the problem. Good luck to you.

    Chronic shell-less egg layer

Egg shell problems can be caused by the hen not having sufficient Calcium. You didn't mention if you were feeding a layer type feed or if you provide Oyster shells as a supplement. Hope this is helpful.

considerations in building coop for deep litter method?

I would suggest raising the doorway to a height of a least 12" to allow access to the coop after a DL of at least 6-8" is established. Also I have found that swinging the door to open out helps with the DL. I would use aged wood chips at a depth 6-8 inches with other materials such as leaves...

one year later - help with coop redesign for frostbite

Amory I believe you do have a humidity and ventilation problem especially when all the flock is in that space with their added body temps and moisture from their breathing creating a more humid condition. I would recommend stopping the heat and possibly try to replace one window with more vent...

    Free range or not?

I do hope free range works for you. But in my case it is not possible with the predator problems Hawks, Coyotes, Coons, etc. my experience has been if you have such predators you will have loses even with supervision.

    Deep litter method

If you could possibly find aged wood chips at your local city or county refuse and or recycle facility that would be the very best material to start with. I would limit the hay and straw. Wood chips , leaves, kitchen and yard waste, will add to your mix very well. You may find a local tree...

    8x8' Coop almost Done!

Great job Nicole. About security have you considered electric fencing. I use one wire about 5-6 inches off the ground and one wire at top of side walls to stop possible climbers , has worked with out fail for me. Also I would recommend deep litter method for bedding in coop and run has made life...

I need to keep water out of the run

Sand alone is no good to stop water, sand has to be in a bag or some other type waterproof container to divert the water. Wood chips inside will help when wet, also mounding dirt or sand in bags around the back side of he run that will send water to your ditch will help. Will your neighbor not...

Sand or deep litter for a warmer coop?

I wouldn't use any sand at all start with aged wood chips, grass clippings, garden waste, leaves, small twigs, kitchen waste, to a depth of at least 6-8 inches to start, and add more carbon materials if any ammonia smell is noticed. The green matter will come from the manure and the worms and...

I need to keep water out of the run

Hard to tell from pics, but it appears the water is coming from behind the coop and run. If that is the case possibly you could set out about 1 foot from the back of your run a dig a diversion ditch around to the front corner that would allow the water to drain around the coop and away down the...

    Wood chips?

Once again as Beekissed said, try to mimic the forest floor with your DL, use aged wood chips, grass clippings, small sticks, leaves, garden waste, kitchen waste etc. worms and other good bugs will take care of the breakdown. Also remember the manure from your flock will provide a lot of the...
