Thank you so much for your help. I have cleaned it with saline and applied antibiotic ointment. I also have her separated with electrolytes in her waterer. The flock is all the same age around 4 months and have been watching for bullies. They all seem to get along but she is low on the pecking...
...a day or two, rinse them out daily as needed.
Work on hydration, get some sugar water into him. If this was not a rat and another rooster, this guy is beaten down and will need some encouragement to regain his vigor. Once drinking, start him eating if possible.
Do you see any maggots...
Look carefully for any maggots moving around. Be sure to keep her away from flies, since they can lay maggot larvae into wounds like this. That is deadly and called flystrike. You can spray some saline or wound spray on her wounds, and then apply plain Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment...
...has a terrible case of fly strike. I’m absolutely beside myself with guilt. I’ve bathed her multiple times today, plucking and scrubbing the maggots off. I then applied some garlic spray and then covered all the raw area with neem oil. She’s currently in a crate resting, very weak. I’m glad...
...fly eaters like wasps and hornets and others. No flies = no predators = more flies later. I've seen lots of bald faced hornets around lately, hunting the buggers. Super cool to watch 😆 plus the rove beetles that eat the maggots and also the flies when they can catch them. Nature is so cool 😆
Update with more questions.
We managed to get all the maggots with the 2 baths on Friday. She’s been resting in the house and seems more alert and energetic every day. The problem is she won’t eat her feed, so we’ve tried giving her eggs, chicken, assorted fruits and vegetables and she does...
Gross! Ok thanks. I’ve dealt with flystrike several years ago and it wasn’t fun. Most of my birds are friendly so I’m checking often but I’ll check the others!!
In hot weather a dirty vent may attract flies and they can get infested with maggot larvae that cause flystrike. So I might clean her vent as needed, and try giving her some plain yogurt or a bit of cottage cheese to see if it firms up her poop. You can trim some fluff from her vent area if...
Welcome To BYC
I think you are doing a good job taking care of her.
Do you detect any bad odor? If not, then likely all the maggots are gone and the wound is healing o.k.
Vetericyn is fine to put on the wound if it's keeping it relatively moist. You may find applying a thin layer of...
...This is my first bird and my first case of this, so I want to make sure she's not just developing some other crazy thing.
I massaged the maggots out (gloves on and prayers said) in warm soapy water and haven't seen any more since. I've been spraying Vetericyn once a day. There's a hard dark...
Thanks for all of the feedback. When I checked on her this morning she looked a lot better. We bathed her again and didn’t find any maggots so that’s a relief. I’ll keep her in the house and hopefully her skin will heal
I would also wash the area to ensure that there are no more maggots too after a soak. Betadine would be my choice. Aloedine could also be used in a pinch.
Thanks for the quick response. She is 2.5 years old and still lays eggs at times. Would neosporin without the pain relief be a good ointment to put on?
The maggots have eaten through her skin unfortunately. I would probably soak her again in the morning and make sure of no more maggots. Antibiotic ointment would be good to coat the area under the vent twice a day. Permethrin spray can be used on the area to kill all maggots. Eventually the skin...
One of our hens had diarrhea and now has fly strike. She was fine yesterday afternoon, but this morning we discovered the maggots. We bathed her and got the maggots off, did an Eldon salt bath and sprayed her with Veterycin. Then we put her in a cage in the house. We just bathed her again...
