Gold laced genetics and improving type

Sounds like you really know your genetics. I wish I understood So am I right in thinking I could cross my gold laced roo to Columbian Pekin hens of good type to improve the type but retain the lacing, then keep putting the female offspring back to the gold laced roo?

Gold laced genetics and improving type

Hmm I have no idea how to find that out. I don’t know of their history. Thank you for your advice

Gold laced genetics and improving type

I have some Gold Laced Pekins which are of course not a standard colour and therefore fairly early in their development. The lacing is good but I’d like to work on improving their type - mainly shorter legs and back and the round plump look that is expected of the breed. What should I cross with...

    Any Good Incubators Beyond Brinsea?

Hi highly recommend Brinsea, but Rcom probably have the edge. A local breeder friend of mine reckons MS Broedmachine’s are the best money can buy. IMO get the best you can afford :thumbsup

    I’ve got a bit of a problem

Some good advice here already, but if daylight hours are short where you are I wouldn’t be at all concerned. They need a break. I have 13 layers and from mid November until Christmas Eve I got not one single egg. All of a sudden I got 3 on Christmas Eve. It’s like they knew it was Christmas! I’m...

why do chicks die all of a sudden?

Many reasons as others have said but I second the coccidiosis. I’m not suggesting yours necessarily died of cocci, but I find at that sort of age they can easily develop it and it will cause death quickly if unnoticed. I always use medicated feed now and keep a very careful eye out for the...

Staggering chick-acquisition over a few weeks

X2 I’ve never had a problem introducing chicks to one another provided they are of a similar age and size. Good luck with your chicks!

Anyone like the brinsea brooder plate?

I have tried the Brinsea plate but actually I prefer the cheaper “Premier” heat plate. I only experienced pasty but once last year out of 100 or so chicks.

Did these chicks die? Eggs look strange

I’d be inclined to leave it - it won’t do any harm. Congratulations on all your new chickies! :jumpy

Mixing week old hatchery chicks with my own hatched chicks

You should be fine if they are just one week different in age. From a biosecurity point of view I’ve not had any issues myself mixing my own chicks with other chicks from a breeder.

    Hatching Light Sussex

They don’t hatch later in my experience. Could your incubator be running a little cold? May be worth putting an extra thermometer in there? Best of luck with your hatch.
