Killing cones - cheap and effective substitute

I don't use cones, I use rope. I make a loop on one end and pull some rope through to make another loop. Its pretty much a lasso. I hang them from a sawhorse. When I butcher, I grab the bird by both legs, open the loop big enough to put the feet through, then slide the loop down to the shanks...

    New skid for day-range shelter

I might need to put a shade cloth or tarp on it during parts of the summer or risk turning it into a giant solar oven. I have 2 friends that keep chickens in a large greenhouse (stationary). The coop/greenhouses I have seen were excellent for winter time, but it gets HOT HOT HOT starting in the...

The first time i saw spayed hens !

Quote: The procedure is typically done on young birds while their sexual organs are still small and undeveloped. The Ovary is in very close proximity to the arteries. I can see how removing a developed ovary would be kinda risky. Why not save your money on antibiotics and cull the bird...

The purpose of poulardizing is to fatten a hen to be eaten. Fat gives the bird more moisture and flavor. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=411126&p=1

What are the the best meat birds that grow up to 5 lbs or 6 lbs .

Other breeds are definitely leaner, but CX are mostly meat. May I suggest standard cornish as a meat bird? Hatchery birds will get to be 8-10- lbs live and 5-7 lbs dressed but will take some time to get that heavy. what about cornish batnams. They are a quarter of the standard size. The last...

    Preserving feathers

Also you will know that it is done when the skin is very rigid, or you can't feel any cold dampness. Oils from fat will never dry. If you have a oil problems aply more borax. It will help absorb oils. It should be done in a week or less. if not move the skin to a place with lots of airflow.

    Preserving feathers

you will want to remove all the fat and membrane that you can. I would rub borax on the inside (flesh side) of the skin to dry and cure. The skin should look frosted when your done. Borax is found in any grocery store. Lay the skin on a flat surface and weight it down so that it dries flat...
