All of the hardware cloth has 1x2's screwed in over the top to secure it. I guess I didn't get pics adder those additions. Multiple locks on the door and nest box.
My wife and I began building our new coop in April. We figured if we put in some hours on the weekends, we would have it completed in two or three weeks. We finished it July 11th. We didn't account for the fact that we aren't as young and energetic as we were when we built our first coop some 12...
Mine is elevated. Mostly because I thought it would look really cool. But also to save on building costs. A walk in coop is great, but they create a lot of unused space.
Mine is 6x8ish and I can reach pretty much everything from the main door or egg door.
My run will be made with 2x4 welded wire, and 1/2 inch hardware cloth. I'm not talking about adding an electric fence, but rather a charged wire around the base, maybe 6" off of the ground. Digging critters tend to dig right where the run meets the ground. A hot wire at the base would...
I'm building a new coop and run and was thinking about critter security. We have coyote, raccoons and the occasional wandering dog to worry about.
I was going to add an apron around the run to prevent digging under it (coop is elevated) but had a thought come to mind.
Has anyone here tried...
The third picture is probably the best to use to explain.
When you pull the long 2x4 up it rotates the wheel down, raising the coop about 3 or 4 inches. You'll notice two smaller pieces of wood in the contraption. One (the horizontal piece) is a fixed "stop" that prevents the lever from over...
OK, got home a little late last night so I didn't post pics. Here you go.
In this last picture, you can see how everything is attached. The 2x4 "Lever" is mounted to a 4x4 block with a lag bolt. The wheel is mounted a couple of inches below that, to the 2x4.
Simply lift the Lever and the...
Me? I'm too fat and old to crawl through that door. My wife, however, is just old. She could do it, but the idea is to get them all into that area and then close it off, via the side access. Then it's just reach in and grab one, or net one if need be.
It rolls fine, but could be better. I'll...
I'll take a couple of pictures when I get home from work tonight, and try to explain the how and why.
I won't build this style again because it's an inefficient use of materials. It's probably twice as tall than it has to be. That extra height is wasted on meat chickens, as they don't roost...
That "little" access door is 24"x18"(give or take.) I'll use that for getting to the feeder, and removing the chickens for slaughter. Today I'll hang the water bucket in the side access.
As far as how I made it, mostly by guess work, and a good supply of trial and error. I do know that, should...
Finally finished up the tractor today. I learned a lot. I cussed a lot. But in the end, it turned out well and the meaties seem to like it.
This is the completed tractor with the chicks in it. We added an apron once we got the chicks into it.
The build was not particularly difficult. But I...
