I know this thread is old...but for others that read it..i would like to share with you...that you CAN HELP hatch them and they can THRIVE! I have had near dead chicks in worse shape than the one that was culled is in the thread by member avonshire and had it LIVE! In fact the last one like...
She will keep them warm as long as you have an area that is out of the wind and is well ventilated... I keep mine in a cage in the hen house until they are a few weeks old..t
Their quarters are too small...if given more room it will stop...one of them could really injure or kill the other...I would consider getting them a larger area asap.
they need grit from day 1 and at night they fill up their crops before they go bed...they eat thruought the night...it should have gone down by in the morning..it can be a little full..if their is an impacted crop you will know it...it will be HUGE.
Silkies are so much fun and super sweet!!! You will really enjoy them! feel free to ask any questions...They will do that when they are young but it will stop...they get along really well with each other and other chickens.
Put it with at least 1 other chick if you can. mine always have a higher success rate when I put them with 1 other chick rather than isolate them.. the other chick seems to give them the little push to live that they need...hope it makes it! the electrolytes and sugar water may also help...just...
The spike to 106 should not have effected unless it was for a long period of time like over an hour.... besides you said you had full developed chicks that were dead so that means it was towards the end you had the problem...if your humidty was not at least over 50% ..should be 60% then that...
Use pine shavings...if you use newspaper it become slippery and can defrom their feet...also, be careful their crop canget impacted...i had a silkie die from eating hay.
pets 100%....we eat the eggs but we would never get rid of them once they stop laying...we just love them!!! They can be as friendly as you want them to be, you just have to spend time with them especially as babies... I love my chickens all 35 of them:)
give it a little more time...the older the hens the longer it can take...but, they will eventually be fine...it may take another few weeks though :) But, they will be ok...
more than 1 or 2 with those 8 hens...is going to be problamatic.....chickens need about 1 roo per every 8-12 hens..they are going to wear out the hens, poor things...each chicken has a job to do...7 is the # of hens you need in order for all the posititions to be filled with a rooster involved...
