Unfortunately we don’t have 2-300 yards of property. We don’t free range often. Most of the time they’re confined to the run, maybe once or twice a week if that.
Wow there’s a lot of pages on this thread. We have a bird feeder in range of chickens when we occasionally let them free range. I’m trying to figure out what wild bird feed is safe if the chickens go and eat some off the ground. Is there any specifics to avoid? I feel like I saw something about...
I found some videos on YouTube as well that helped. It wasn’t my favorite thing to do at all but good to know there wasn’t any suffering. Also I ended up scaring/shocking mine cause I grabbed it from behind while at night and it began screaming more or less-don’t recommend doing that.
Originally for this years decline in production I thought it was from a rooster we got with this most recent additions but we got rid of him months ago with no changes. And we free range only on occasion.
Understand, but they were laying I feel much less than 50%. Their first year it was close to one egg a day from each. This past year was hardly 1 egg a week or more from each. And believe it or not, my SLW was the best layer this season after she started laying with laying almost daily.
Thanks everyone for the input. The 2.5 year olds are a mix of RIR and barred rocks, earlier in the season I figured they should still be laying decent at that age. The new ones are SLW, OE and possibly a maran. Ok good to know feed is most likely not the culprit. I’ve never had success searching...
hi everyone. We currently have only hens in our flock but have been feeding Purina flock raiser crumble with supplement oyster shell because we originally had a rooster with them.
We haven’t been getting any eggs recently and 3 of them are less than a year old. Prior to this it was still...
Hm. Some of it may be that she is also molting so maybe just fragile feathers to begin with? But the some others being just generally scared of him as well I guess. Hmm so I guess well have to get rid of him.. do you think I can just turn on my atv in the pole barn and let him die by CO poisoning?
So that’s not normal rooster behavior? This is our first one got by accident as a chick. Right now he’s separated in the pole barn and this is first time in a while all the girls have been in the run freely.
I don’t know if it’s exactly violence or just him being too excited. I don’t know if I could mentally kill and eat it though. I’ve been trying to find a new home but no luck
We have an almost 7mo GLW rooster with 7 hens. He’s been too aggressive with them and has one of ours going through molt bare backed and bloody. Most the time we don’t free range and they have a 10x10 run. 2 of our hens would stay in the coop to avoid him. We just separated him in the pole barn...
We have a golden laced Wyandotte rooster we’re looking to rehome. We weren’t in the market for one and ended up raising him from a chick sold by Bowmans. He’s 6.5-7months old. No signs of aggression towards humans, we have kids and a dog. We have limited space and he’s starting to cause wear to...
