    Cheaper alt. to hardware cloth?

Now that's a fascinating idea; using stucco lath. I'm going to price that at my local big box store this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion. We've had our hens for about year now. We've used the green plastic hardware stuff as a temp run. hens are locked up at night and let out only when we...

I finally got DH talked into building me a coop

We used a staple gun to install our vinyl flooring - it was easy and quick to use. I have a board just behind the roost that I also lined with vinyl. I use something with a straight edge to scrape the poop off the board. It comes off very easily. I also use a cat litter box scooper to lift...

I finally got DH talked into building me a coop

Kellyand Katie, That's a nice coop and similar to mine. Mine is only 4 x 4 feet and about 6' tall at highest point. I only have 5 hens. Mine is functional but if doing it again I'd make it larger. A retired friend built ours out of recycled wood and materials. It did take more than a day but...

Beddings For Outdoor Run In Pacnw Rain Shadow?

We ordered our food grade DE online and received a case of 6 large plastic canisters. I scatter it sometimes with a slotted spoon or an old mesh pasta drainer. We also have the DE in the coop and so far no evidence of mite infestation. Felidaet: I am wondering if you can put out small...

    Head Room

Our coop is a shed style, 4 x 4 foot, and about 6 ft high at highest point. We only have five hens but we see now that it's not comfortable or functional for us humans to maneuver around in. Next coop will be bigger and taller. I'm only 5'2" but I'm always smacking my head on the top of door...

Rolled hay, alfalfa hay, grass hay, Timothy hay- What the hay?

I went to my local feed store and purchased one square bale of straw hay which was the final cutting of a local grass hay. It was more than adequate to layer my outdoor run area. The hens love to scratch in it and it keeps the area from getting muddy. It also makes the area look more attractive...

Beddings For Outdoor Run In Pacnw Rain Shadow?

Thanks for your replies. So far the hens are just loving the straw - it is like a playground with hidden treasures underneath to scratch for. Eventually I will add sand when I have the cash to have a load delivered. I think I'll also look into shredded wood trimmings (not cedar though). I...

    Food and Water Placement

During the summer I keep water in the outside covered coop area. Now that the rainy season is here I've redone the inside of our small coop so that the main food and water containers are inside the coop. I still have a smaller food and water container in an outdoor area for when they are outside.

    Taj Mahal of Chicken Coops

Way cool. I think I'll have to start checking craigslist for carports in addition to everything else I look for. "Chicken TV"...I like that. I'm gonna steal that from ya!

Beddings For Outdoor Run In Pacnw Rain Shadow?

Hi trilyn.... no worries! I have several containers of food grade DE (diatometeous earth) that I mix in with all bedding to deal with mites. This temp run is really just a proto-type for what we'll eventually build with lumbar and hardware cloth and heavier wire later on. BTW - I was...

Beddings For Outdoor Run In Pacnw Rain Shadow?

Well, since I had the day off and the chance to run out I went ahead and got one bale of straw before you folks answered! I've used straw as a winter mulch in garden beds and it did eventually break down by the next spring but gave me something less muddy to walk on over the winter. I've...

Beddings For Outdoor Run In Pacnw Rain Shadow?

I live in Portland OR /Vancouver WA metro area. I've got the indoor run and coop covered with sand and pine shavings - all is good there and those work great. My question is about the outdoor run/play area for my hens. They are not out there all day long but only when we are home. I think...

    My $10.00 coop :)

I like it - mine is about the same size but with a smaller door. I wish I had a human size door because I keep smackin' my head.

    Woohoo - first eggs!

Husband went out to open up the coop this morning and came back with 2 small perfectly shaped eggs! We think they are probably from our Sicilian Buttercup. Later this afternoon, about 4 pm, there was another egg. Our girls were purchased as week-old chicks on Memorial Day so that would make...

Need advice on best place for coop/ run (brand new to this)

Hi, and welcome to chicken parenthood-to-be! We are on just a half-acre. We only wanted a few hens for eggs so we scoped out an area north of the house but in close proximity so we can visit often, and hear if there is a problem. We have a shed-style coop with a small run attached. We also...

My small solution to a muddy run

I have a small run attached to the coop for my 5 hens to use while I'm at work. It is very secure with hardcloth above, below, and three sides. The remaining side is attached to the coop. For this run I use sand on the ground. During the summer I just cover it with shade cloth. Today I...

    Best organic feed???

I think most organic feeds may be locally produced? I'm near Portland OR and I'm trying a new one from the Urban Farm store. It did cost more. So far the hens seem to eat it fine. They still prefer scraps and grain that I toss out to them.

Introducing New Members to the Flock- Please answer soon

Well we are taking the plunge of adding a couple more hens. Our original flock which we raised from chicks produced 3 roosters which we re-housed elsewhere. The girls are now 4 1/2 months old and about ready to lay. We now want to replace the roos with a couple of older laying hens. We hope...
