Hen's not Laying? Chickens Require 14+ hours of light to keep laying

Thanks for your suggestions. The pigs eating them has crossed our minds (and believe me there has been some serious debate in this family over the egg debacle recently) and we've also considered badgers, rats etc, but considering the amount of layers I have we would surely have seen even one...

Hen's not Laying? Chickens Require 14+ hours of light to keep laying

OK, here's the deal. I have about 110 chickens (RIR's, Boschveld (African cross breed) and barred rocks) and I'm not getting a SINGLE egg. Up until a couple of months ago I was getting trays and trays a week. And now? Not even one silly stupid little egg. Now I understand the whole winter...

    Citrus byproduct ideas PLEASE!!!

We have just managed to secure the contract to remove all fruit and veg from a local greengrocer as long as its on a daily basis and we take everything...including the citrus. The pigs don't like the citrus and the wormfarm won't either. Any byproduct/processing ideas that won't break the bank...

    Piglet testicle and general queries

Had tea with the farmer next door (he's a real grownup farmer, not pretenders like us!) today and picked his brains bout all things pig. He swears that he has never castrated any of his pigs and never had one comeback (he used to sell commecially). He says the answer is in slaughtering before...

    Newbie question regarding free range...

Sounds great to me. Whenever I get my knickers in a twist as to whether I'm doing it right, giving to little / too much, I just remind myself about the abundance of very healthy looking chickens that run wild in amongst the shanty towns here and don't get any feed EVER. They are beautiful...

    Newbie question regarding free range...

I have about 100 completely free range layers on 4.5 hectares. I have all different ages so I give them grower pellets and then supply crushed oyster shells for the layers. I don't know acreage so I can't tell if you have enough space etc, but what I do know is that chickens deplete the...

    Egg farmers worst nightmare!....

I have about 100 layers and supply a little country restaurant down the road with eggs. Trouble is, I had a broody hen sitting on a clutch of about 12 eggs for about 2 weeks. Up until about 3 days ago. They mysteriously disappeared.....After some investigation, I discover one of my 9 yr old...

Pesky broody hens - advice please

No, but I'll most certainly try. Thanks for your help. Maybe you can also advise me on how to move a broody hen and her eggs successfully. As my hens are free range I sometimes come across a broody under a bush in the middle of nowhere. Rats, otters and mongoose/mongeese? are a real problem...

Pesky broody hens - advice please

How long does a hen have to sit on an egg before it becomes uncool to eat ? Every day I get home from work in the late afternoon. There are always a handful of broody hens that jump onto a clutch of newly laid eggs and sit tight. The problem is that by the time I get home, they could have been...

    Piglet testicle and general queries

Hey Springchicken. We aren't really worried about maximum growth as they are for our own consumption and really just want to make sure they have a happy healthy upbringing. Will they get that with what we're giving them?
