    Olive Egger Black Australorps?

If you have more than one Ameracauna, then some are Ameracaunas mixed with a brown egg rooster breed and that causes the green eggs. I ended up with that and to my excitement one of them is a dark olive layer, one light green and 4 light blue. Now I wish they were all olive eggers just because I...

    Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

Not a great pic of them in the brooder but there are 6 Ameracaunas, 6 Plymouth Barred Rocks, and 8 Rainbow Layers. I wanted Production Reds instead of the Rainbow Layers but the wife for got when she went to pick them up and was distracted by getting different colored eggs. Oh well. Going to do...

Help Snakes keep trying to get my ducks!

Snake eats my birds, snake dies. It's called the circle of life. They leave my birds/eggs alone they are free to roam and eat the rodents. If you are seeing that many snakes and they are starting to go after your birds you probably need to thin them out anyway.

    Feeding squirrels to your chickens

Thanks for the info. I've got plenty of carcass disposal space well away from my chickens. I think I may put the air rifle to use and give it a try to see how they do. Going to be expanding the flock this spring so it would be a cheap way to supplement feed as well. I like to give them variety...

    Feeding squirrels to your chickens

Since chickens are omnivores and like meat, I was wondering if anyone has ever given a freshly killed squirrel to their chickens. I have an abundance of squirrels that need thinned out and am thinking about trying it. Just seems like an easy way to add something to their diet this time of year...

    Why Name that CHICKEN?

I only named my main roo and I call him Cogburn. Don't name the others they are just livestock to me. We just butchered 4 nameless roos from our spring hatch.

My chicken is very ill, I dont know what it is!!

Personally I would just put it down. But my chickens aren't pets they are for egg production and food so I don't risk sick birds. Good luck with it.

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

Yes the light will affect the laying cycle. I started putting 24 hour light in my coop last year and they laid eggs like clockwork regardless of the temp. Then I only had them slow down if they were molting. I have a new coop this year so I have to figure out how to get a light in it.

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

If they are sitting on the nest then it will be soon that they start to lay. Their eggs will be a bit lighter in color then the RIR's. Mine have just started to molt so they have slowed down a bit but they were consistent egg layers up to that point. Soon I will be adding light to the coop...

When will my rhode island reds start laying?

Tink The oyster shell can be added to their food. It provides added calcium needed for egg production. Or, if you don't want to add to food you can put a small amount in a container they can eat from in their coop and they will eat it when they need it. Another option is to keep their egg shells...

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

Well at least one of my buffs started laying yesterday. Praise the Lord. All RIR's are laying now and just waiting on Black Sex Links to start. I put a trail cam in the coop above the laying boxes to better track the layers until they are all laying.

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

My buffs are 24 weeks and not laying yet. I have 3 RIR hens the same age and one of them just layed first egg yesterday. Another brown egg in laying box right now but older hens lined up and laying so I haven't retrieved it yet. It appears another RIR layed today. Yeah. Now just one more RIR to...

When will my rhode island reds start laying?

You can get oyster shell at the farm store. Good source of needed calcium for the hens and their eggs. I mix it in their food. Every egg song is different. It is when a hen starts making lot's of noise because she is about to lay. I have 4 older hens that are laying. One sounds like she is...
