@whoop whoop, it was a very nice day, we started a whole veggie farm at my house, got about 12 fruit trees now in the last 5 months or so  truly time to get a farm :D
@whoop whoop they are full sized, I enjoy having the big fluffy pillows, bit easier to manage as well for me. I quit liked the new vet, also a new lady there who seems good with birds, they were a great help with my girls, also taught me some useful things which got the flock doing a bit better...
@whoop whoop that sounds great, I love the sebrights, the laced birds have always been my favourite regardless of breed, though I couldn't have them here because I hear they fly very well, which wouldn't work with my dogs.
Must add though that of all my mistakes starting out with chooks getting...
Hi @whoop whoop sorry not to get back to you sooner, just been really busy, was out of town in the cape for the last week, guess everyone's just busy as well. Sorry to hear that about Henry, but at least he got a good home. I met the new vet in Bryanston some time ago with one of my girls, she...
Hi all, I have a hen about to hatch a clump of eggs, so wanted to find out about vaccinating in Jo'burg, anything specific that we need or don't compared to international sites? Where do you get vaccines etc. from? @Nadene so sorry to hear about that, have had my share of losses as well and I...
Hi everyone, I was just curious and wanted to find out what you would get with a black roo and gold laced hen. Can't find anywhere what this will make.
Latest update, both eggs hatched and look healthy. I found some nice orpingtons that were quite pricey but thought it would be better to just get some adults to get new flock started rather than struggling again with chicks. I got 7 of them today, all really nice looking birds, hope they settle...
@hedz82 very interesting stuff :D
I wasn't able to get hose Australorps so now I'm sitting in a rut, can't find any affordable nice chickens that are close enough to home to get, on the the cape usually :( I after candling my eggs I've seen that they are growing well, expecting them to hatch his...
Hi all, I couldn't get Pekin eggs, but my last girl had a good spout of laying just now so I have four eggs that I put under her, hopefully all hatch out and are girls, I'm candling tonight for the first time :fl
I can't seem to find more Pekins so I hope my current hatch will be enough to...
@hedz82 I live next to a park so we have lots of different types of rats, mice, etc. but unfortunately not many snakes anymore so they aren't controlled at all on that side. Luckily the poison has done its job and there are no more rats so just hope it stays like that. Will be sure to when I...
@hedz82 they started taking off all the little ones, which cause I've just started is pretty much the entire flock. We didn't do much to begin with other than set lots of traps to try catch/kill the rats, but there were simply too many for that to be very effective. We also can't really set any...
Hi all, sorry to hear @whoop whoop and @hedz82, my sympathies for you and your families.
I just lost almost my entire flock due to a rat infestation, sitting with only three chooks now, Raptor still doing well though, and the stress has caused my girls to stop laying. One though has just went...
Here they are
They are still a bit nervous so they wouldn't come out of the bamboo, I'll try get better pics later when they have calmed down The one in the first pic is in a cage in my room at the moment, and has been nicknamed "problem case" because s/he keeps attacking the others...
Hi everyone, so I went out and got five more LF Cochins this afternoon, this time from a breeder who keeps to standards and shows his birds, rather than hatchery stock like previous birds of mine, and I must say that the difference is astounding. They are only four weeks old so I can't be sure...
Just got home with 5 more LF Cochins, absolutely stunning. The guy I got them from shows his birds and they are really excellent. He also had lavender and buff orpingtons, really nice as well, wanted some myself But can't really have more than one breed at the moment.
Sorry if this is wrong, but from my experience, I have two Cochins who are sisters, and one has incredible feathering, and he other not so wonderful, so it could just be different from individual to individual, not necessarily cross breeding, as my chooks parents are both very nicely feathered...
Thanks, it's summer here though, and this has been the coldest week since October, makes life so much easier with chicks. I guess I'll chance it and get them, just watch if they're ok. Thanks :D so excites now
Thanks, cause I've got someone holding five chicks for me until they're old enough to be left alone outside and they are getting impatient so I'm worried that they won't keep them for me much longer :/ they are going on four weeks now and our temperatures don't go below 65 at the moment, but...
