Ok- Thanks. That was the case then. The humidity kept jumping up as more and more chicks would hatch. It probably spiked that night causing the 5 chicks to not make it.
After 11 healthy chicks hatched, I now have had a batch of 4-5 very bad chicks hatch. They have either died while hatching (pipped and/or partial zip), or have emerged with barely any function and have died within 6 hours of hatching. They cannot hold up their head and can barely walk. The...
I have a very lonely Buff Polish Hen. The flock of 20 birds will not let her sleep near them, and will barely let her eat or anything. She is very alone and is picked on. She is incredibly sweet. I had ordered two of her breed from the hatchery, but only one survived. She is now 4 months...
I spotted the fox again last night around 11:30- again a new time for him. He tried to get in, but I had just made improvements on the coop, and he couldn't get in. phew. Haven't yet set the trap. will do so tonight. This fox is relentless!
Open fox season in is November her, btw!
We've had a serious fox issue. It's taken out 4 of my best layers (it's like he hones in on the best!) and nearly got away with another. He comes at different times also, so he is no predictable. Sometimes he's found his way in the coop, other times he's struck just as I let them out in the...
Thank-you for clearing this up. It is my first time having a hen go broody, so I didn't know what to expect. How long will she do this? Her eggs aren't even fertilized, as I don't have a roo. Should I let her pretend with an egg?
Is my chicken ok? I thought she was just going broody, but now the behavior is going beyond. I took out the eggs from the nestbox- she still lays in it and refuses to leave and will peck my hand when I get close. I moved the nestbox, she will still lay in the spot where the nestbox used to...
She's usually the leader of the group and I haven't noticed any of the others pecking her at all, but I'll keep my eye out. That would be horrible if they were to turn on her.
Ok- Well, I won't be giving her any more advil.... She seems fine now. I didn't give her any antibiotics either. But she does have some large flesh wounds, although she is with the rest of the flock now and is walking around and eating.
Well, the wound dressing came off anyway. She has about 4 wide open teeth bite wounds and is missing feathers about everywhere. She is eating a little now. I gave her some children's advil.
Still in shock though.
QUESTION: What antibiotic should I give her? I dressed the open flesh wounds with neosporin and gauze, have her in a box in my kitchen with water with vitamins. She is in complete shock though and is just starting with her mouth open. Not drinking. I am guessing I need to give her an oral...
SOoooooo, I'm out. I had Pete & Gerry's heirloom eggs. I checked. They were clears. And apparently they do not keep roos. So, I will try Trader Joes....
It's my second doe to have a litter of 5. And they're not big girls either. But all are healthy. One looks to be very small, but so did one in the last litter of 5 and they are all happy and healthy.
I will try to post pictures later. I can't find my phone at the moment (to take pics)...
I just set the store bought Ameracauna eggs I had gotten. There were a few different shades of green in there, so I am hoping one is from a fertile hen. ;)
What day can I candle?
I just bought some Cage Free Organic Americauna eggs from my grocery store (Pete & Gerry's Heirloom Eggs). It doesn't say fertile eggs anywhere on the carton. Has anyone had any luck with just plain cage free eggs or do they have to specifically say 'fertile' eggs.... I'm thinking of popping...
