    Chickens Wasting food!!!

I've asked my kids to take a pic and text it to me - so far they haven't. I'll go out and take a pic this afternoon and post it. I'll also get a pic of our 5-gallon bucket watering system with auto-fill!

I checked the link - that is exactly what it is!!! It even says it can be edible! Not that I'm going to try! Really I just don't want it competing with my vegetable garden plants for water an nutrients. I will say it is pretty cute to see the week old chicks go through them like they are some...

Thanks for that - we tried the Roundup in an area where the chickens don't go. Actually I never use/buy Roundup but we take care of a home for some Canadian friends who insist on using Roundup regularly on his yard so we "borrowed" some! The only reason I really want to get rid of it is it has...

    Chickens Wasting food!!!

Yep, normal chicken behavior! Our feeders are 5-gallon buckets with 1" holes around the bottom. The bucket is bolted onto a large planter saucer for the food tray. Ours were flinging the food that was in the tray portion out so they could eat the food as it came out the holes. It was...

These are some great ideas! My boss has a very large yard and always gives us his leaves to be used as compost for our garden. Of course some make it in the coop as bedding. Another co-worker does not have a garden but has a lot of kitchen compost materials that she feels bad just throwing...

Since we're discussing weeds/grass, etc. I'm wondering if anyone can ID this weed/bush thing. Not the tumbleweed (darker green) on the left center, but the grayish green one. They grow to be a couple feet tall and diameter. When we had blister beetles blow through the blister beetles really...

Very Happy Momma! Obviously she accepted the chicks immediately We waited till dark and put them all in with her. At first she didn't realize what they were and gave a gentle peck. When the chick squeaked she realized they were her babies and went right to work tucking them all in under her.

I'm so excited! I found chicks for my broody! Someone in my area had eggs in the incubator that just hatched. I got 2 white EEs, a white EE bantam, a white bantam of some sort and a bantam with wild-type markings. The daughter wasn't sure what the last 2 are for sure but they were too...

    Arizona Chickens

I feel so bad for her. I got 4 broodies this spring so we have a few babies. The third is still broody but I'm having success getting her off the nest. The 4th is absolutely determined. I figured if I could give her some babies she could get off the nest and out of the coop where there's some...

Does anyone in the East Valley or Maricopa have any day old EE chicks or fertile EE eggs for sale? I have a Barred Rock that really wants to be a mom and we have lots of requests for the green/blue eggs.

    Arizona Quail

I don't know - sorry :) Maybe you can contact your HOA for a hard copy of their CCRs. That way you won't alert them that you might be looking at something called into question!

    Arizona Quail

I have my chickens on 3.3 acres south of Maricopa so no problems with CCR compliance for me! That being said, the CCRs in Tortosa seem to make it ok as pets. However, a friend of ours in Tortosa had a neighbor complain about his chickens so he gave them to me rather than put up a fight. I...

    Arizona Quail

I'm in Maricopa and raise chickens (currently have 15 hens, 1 roo, three 4-wk old babies and one 1-wk old baby). My friend lives in Phx and just went "quail shopping" yesterday. She came home with 6 quail. This is her first venture in poultry. I haven't seen her quail yet, but in helping...

    Arizona Chickens

I haven't been on here for ages! My hens are doing very well, with a few broodies that we have allowed to raise babies! My friend is wanting to raise backyard quail. I know there is a quail forum which I have pointed her to. Just wondering if we have any local AZ quail people that I could...

    Roosters Feathers Looking Like Fur

Hi all, Does anyone have any ideas as to why a seemingly healthy, 3-yr-old Buff Orpington rooster's feathers would suddenly start looking like "fur"? He has no Silkie in him, and this wasn't evident until recently. Nutritional deficiency? Stress? Disease? Heat? Thanks

Does anyone have any ideas as to why a 3 yr old Buff Orpington rooster's feathers would suddenly start looking more like fur than feathers? Could it be the heat?

AuroraRose - Do you already have a pond to raise the tilapia and prawns? I work with a company that seals man-made ponds using amended soil rather than plastic liners - designed to be permanent. Maybe we could work out some sort of exchange - pond help for some of the fish, etc.! Sorry. I...
