I'm confussed..& need help....Sick hen swollen belly, not egg bound

Thank you. She was internally laying and I tried to keep her comfortable. She passed away in June. Unfortunately I lost another hen a few months later, she seemed to of had a heart attack, she was fine and acting normal and a few hours later I found her dead inside the coop. I am left now with...

Coop Builders - What would you have changed or done differently?

Nice coop!! I would of changed the nesting boxes, put them on the outside, they would of had a bit more room inside the coop. At least the nesting boxes are 18" off the floor so they can still walk around under them, hubby put a slanted piece of plywood up over them on hinges so I can keep...

    Coops

I'd probably go at least a 8' X 8' that would give you 64 sq. ft. inside, great size for 12 chicks and for when "chicken math" hits you can easily add more. Also having the nesting boxes outside is a great idea too. a good range of roosting bars is always nice too, especially if some of the...

    Coops

Best to figure at least 4 sq ft per hen. so with 12 at minimum 48 sq ft of coop space. Depending on where you live and if you will free range or if they might be inside a lot you should consider more space in the coop. External nesting boxes (being able to access from the outside) are great...

Cold weather & the hen house

Another Idahoan checking in, up here about 60 miles from the Canadian border. We did insulate our coop, during winter it can easily get to -20 especially with the wind chill, and believe me if I could of done it again I'd built a coop with OUT insulation. It's very hard to get good ventilation...

    Understanding Chicken Math

Got to love everyone's chicken math!! I almost had hubby letting me get a few more (I wanted a few easter eggers) but we would of had to increase the run size (coop was fine for 4-5 more since one isn't doing well and I'd be down to only 3) but......he figured how much for the new roof area...

Food and Water - Inside or out?

I keep their food and water inside. Even with 1/2" welded wire the mice can actually fit through the fence. I do keep one feeder out in the run but only put in what they will eat when they are outside. I still have mice reaching through the fence trying to get to what ever food then hens fling...

    Sand Coop Floor...Ants?

Chickens love most bugs! I've seen mine eat carpenter ants almost fighting over them but you get a big bug and they all turn away from it. If you have mosquito's they love those too.

I'm confussed..& need help....Sick hen swollen belly, not egg bound

Thank you. You'd figure living up in a rural area with all the farms around here there would be a vet that would be able to treat her, but there is only one and all he treats is large farm animals all they would do is be able to euthanize her. I felt her belly yesterday and it feels pretty...

I'm confussed..& need help....Sick hen swollen belly, not egg bound

She seems to be doing ok. Her belly looks like it is getting a little fuller, and she is loosing a few feathers on it. She is down on the ground a lot more pecking at food and sunning herself, she isn't running away from the 2 that peck at her a bit, she eats great and loves her treats...

How many chickens for my coop and run,

Also you might want to think about "chicken math" you get some and a year or so later you will want more and more. So you might not want to get too many at first, they grow on you and before you know it "chicken math" hits.

New Cape Cod Coop (Pic Heavy)

    Help me with interior layout?

Looks great to me. I have the same size coop you do but apparently I didn't design it too good cause I'm having problems with roosting space, not right now but I want to add another 4 hens hopefully this year. I have the nesting boxes inside the coop and hubby built a cover over the top of the...

    Very emaciated hen

Safeguard liquid. It is sold as a goat wormer. Use .5cc per 2.2 lb of hens weight (so if they are 7 lbs give them 1.5cc) you can buy a syringe without the needle, then 10 days later give same dosage, do not eat eggs for 14 days after last worming. If one may have worms it would be best to worm...

    help!

Bring her inside and fill a tub with warm water, enough to cover her bottom and let her soak for about 30 minutes. It helps them relax and hopefully she will pass the egg. Just hold on to her, they do like the warm water. Hope it helps.

    Space

If they are going to be in there a lot during winter, 3-4 sq. ft. per hen would be nice, if it is in warmer area where they would be out most of the time of the year then maybe 1.5- 2 sq.ft. you could get away with. Also depends on the breed/size of the hens too, smaller hens can handle a little...

Hen door to run - Leave open or closed at night?

I've been leaving mine open 24/7 now that winter is over, they love it, I have a secure run and roof over it. I will probably close it up at night during winter, it does get below 0 several time during winter, I would like to leave it open though but the roosting bar is over the pop door and...
