Yep, I've seen the same sort of thing, though at a little farmer's market they charged a set fee and kept the eggs in a cooler with ice etc. They made a good effort to keep them cool. I think it really depends on the market, where the market is, and how well they are checked or even visited by...
I only wash just before cracking and tell my customers the same. Unless they're gross, then I do wash them and keep those for home use and use them quickest.
Is this what you're talking about? nothing rotating about it, but the "chicken moat" surrounding the garden prevents a lot of things from getting into the garden, and you can let them into the garden at specific times to clean out bugs and things after everything is harvested, or before you...
errr.... I wouldn't count on any deaths either. If you order 12 of your choice of a breed, some (most) hatcheries will add 'packing peanuts' meaning extra cockerel chicks to make up the difference so there's enough in the box to give them added stability and body warmth. I'd find someone else...
Not skinny, so they deal with cold well, small combs so they deal with cold well, not grouchy when confined so they deal with being indoors during cold well... need I go on?

Ok, that reply just went out to cyberspace somewhere. Let's try this again,
I was waiting for someone else to reply as I don't particularly like to criticize other's birds. But since you asked, I'm assuming you'd like a straight answer in order to help you with your selections. So...
Meyers have a video on their web site showing how they hatch them, I have been past there and they have some big barns/sheds where they do keep a few breeds, but they also get their eggs from outside sources, the eggs come in and get set up for their incubators, then they hatch them themselves...
Here's a couple pictures, not great pics, and prolly would have been nicer on a sunny day too.
Do they have too much black on them? I need to get some of my hens.
How much cooler? I'd say comfortable room temperature, so 70 - 75 would be ideal, but 80 isn't terrible. Just out of the way so they can settle as you said.

ROFL I'm pretty sure Ol' Al has often rued the day he made that clumsy fox paw (yes, I know how to really spell faux pas). It was something that if you or I said it, we could easily have clarified with better phrasing, but since that soundbite won't ever be allowed to die, he's stuck...
You forgot one teresa-78, Some people are just never satisfied!
I understand why you might be willing to send them some extra eggs for now and in this case to keep your seller's rating high, but I'd make double sure that you put the disclaimer in your comments to reflect that beyond doing...
I have a couple comments, first, to the question about what people fed their chickens in the past... they free ranged them and feed them whatever extra grain they had on hand. Not much science to it, and no, the chickens didn't drop dead from it but they probably didn't lay the quantity or...
So very sorry for your loss okieinalaska. I hope your move back to familiar places and family goes well. I was stationed at Elmendorf for 7 years and understand about how far from family it can feel. I often wished (still do in fact) that I could have moved my family to AK so I could have the...
Things like this are why I avoid adopting from the pound or shelters. Bureaucracy and I don't get along... there are good pets out there from other sources.
They are persistent but not too relentless as long as the coop is tight and they never get to the hens again. Bobbi-J is right that chicken wire won't keep them out, they are strong enough to just tear it apart. Hardware cloth fastened down right will keep them out, and a hot wire is also...
Whenever we see the "lump" posts, it's probable a lot of us smile a little (in a kindly way never fear, we've all been there) and go make sure someone's answered. This is such a common question because it really IS alarming if you've never seen it.
I'm really happy that there's such a bunch...
Here's a link to that Lakewood group that should work better for everyone. http://www.localfoodcleveland.org/group/wewantchickensinlakewoodnow It sure looks like they're working hard at it!
Oh, and another interesting link for people in the area...
