This isn't the greatest photo, but this was my coop setup when we lived in the suburbs. We had a run and in the back left corner I built a small roosting loft right under the roof (just corrugated plastic, but I would get metal as it won't get broken by branches coming down). The 2 outside...
It was completed well before the mobile coop got moved inside of it and days before the guineas hatched, so it shouldn't have been carbon monoxide from machinery.
Yes! This has been my experience with their customer service as well. The guy who makes them really knows basically everything about the doors and seems to care a lot about making sure buyers are able to make informed decisions.
I'm a person that likes bells and whistles, but for something...
Our mobile coops that don't necessarily get eyes on them every night after curfew have ADOR1 auto doors. The maker is in the US and although these have a bit of a DIY vibe when it comes to programming (think of setting up an old raspberry Pi or something, there's no screen so you're relying on...
We have 2 coops built with slatted floors. When we get very cool weather (low teens to negative single digits here in our part of KY) I put cardboard down on the floor and cover it in bedding. The coops spend the winter in my garden anyway, so when the cold snap has passed, I drag the cardboard...
i design roof trusses and recently had a house built with a 2 pitch roof. Anything less than 3 pitch is recommended to go with standing seam metal roofing or a membrane. For something like a chicken coop though, any type of metal roofing (as long as the fasteners are placed on the high parts...
Thanks! Nope, heat lamp bulbs have been used before, and they're not teflon coated. That 95 degrees is at the hottest part of the brooder, the majority of it is cool spots. Our weather this autumn has been very frustrating, with daytime highs up into the 90s a few days and overnight lows...
Thanks! Yeah, we have been so happy with the first eggmobile that I picked up an old 2-horse trailer on marketplace and redid that over the winter and added a second batch of layers. The horse trailer is even better IMO, and that's what our flock is living in while the red coop gets used as a...
Thank you for the input on this. We primarily got the guineas as early predator detection and they've been very effective at getting our and the chickens' attention when there's something afoot. I guess if we try guineas again we will reevaluate this.
Thank you so much for the reply! And it’s great to know that it’s likely that they ate the shavings. What do folks usually use for bedding? Puppy pads or paper towels? Would offering grit have made a difference in this case? With chicks I usually wait til they’re a couple weeks old, introduce...
Crossposting this to the chicks sub forum as I suspect I may get more help here.
I’ve raised nearly 2 hundred chicks, including 6 guinea fowl I picked up as keets at the feed store and a couple batches of chicks I’ve incubated from eggs from my chicken flock. I’ve brooded them all similarly...
I’ve raised nearly 2 hundred chicks, including 6 guinea fowl I picked up as keets at the feed store and a couple batches of chicks I’ve incubated from eggs from my chicken flock. I’ve brooded them all similarly, and had pretty good success, I may have lost 5 overall before this.
My brooder...

Thanks! When we brooded ~50 last spring they were in a ~5x8' enclosure and had plenty of space, so I'm expecting I may need to split them after a little while, but I'm hoping it's enough for at least a week while we...
When I initially asked about a heat plate with larger quantities of chicks in an unheated building last year the recommendations were that we were likely to see crushing issues with plates, so I'm not relying on a plate of any kind with a larger group. The instructions from the hatchery also...
We will be brooding ~45 chicks in a 3x8 galvanized tub (I have a second one I can employ if these get too crowded in the single and need an additional space before their mobile coop is completed). Last year we brooded ~52 chicks in another mobile coop inside our unheated shop building using two...
