I use zipties on mine and just replace them as necessary. I found they grow out of legbands too quickly, so I bought a bulk packet of multicoloured zipties, works out cheaper. (Plus, zipties are useful)
The chook house was my dad's project. It is, by far, better built and more comfortable than what we live in.
Geoffrey is not from Game of Thrones but I do have a Cersei!
And yep I am in an organisation like WIRES - not WIRES, just the local wildlife rescue. It is the slow season for me...
Some are pets but we do have breeding pairs. We're hoping to breed our northern blue tongues and central beardies next season. Last season we only bred our eastern blue tongues.
I have a bit of a blue tongue problem (I have 11) as well as a chicken and quail problem....
Here's some random...
A very mixed flock of 30! French wheaton marans, australorps, araucanas, wyandottes, pekins, a frizzle, a plymouth rock, a welsummer, a brown leghorn and some mystery mixes.
The australorps are my favourite girls, they have beautiful big dark eyes. I am hoping to get some faverolles soon as...
That is pretty much what mine looked like. There was a lot more leg bone than I'm used to but it wasn't off putting. There wasn't much meat but considering they were living totally free range, eating mostly what they forage, you'd expect it.
I have two 15 week old sussex roosters who will be...
Well we had our first full meal of homegrown rooster tonight.
All eight legs in a roasting pan with carrot, onion, garlic, thyme and sage. Added two cups of stock and cooked in a low oven for an hour and a half. Served with homemade thyme and rosemary dinner rolls, jacket potato, and gravy...
We knew from the start we'd end up with extra roosters. I decided I would rather eat my own happy, healthy free range roosters, knowing they'd had a good life, over eating supermarket chicken that probably had a miserable existence. My boys had a great life, they got treats, they got to roam...
Ours were done by a friend who just did it with his hands, but he suggested for us girls who may not have the upper body strength, to put them on the ground with a broomstick on their neck, put your feet on either side, hold their legs and pull up. I didn't try today because I'm a bit of a wuss...
We did our first four roosters today with just kitchen knives and an axe.
Two had their heads removed with an axe, the other two had their necks broken. The two who had their necks broken seemed to flap around a lot less and there wasn't blood everywhere, so I think I prefer that method...
Well today was a big step... We processed four young roosters, all between 18 - 20 weeks - an australorp, a barnevelder and two barred rocks. They hadn't been fattened up or anything, just left to free range as per usual and we just took them off their perches early this morning. An experienced...
There was a lot of discussion about what to do with our new hen house. My dad wanted a look that was based off the huts used by stockmen in the Victorian high country. He is a carpenter by trade and wanted to use the hen house as a chance to experiment with techniques he wants to use building...
Oh well, I was hoping the differently coloured legs would mean the barred rocks were different sexes.
And disappointing that the brahma is probably a boy (and not a brahma to boot.)
I'd be thrilled if the Sussex and australorps were pullets though, they were out of my first hatch ever.
Looking for some help sexing my newer chickens! I've made a few guesses but would like to hear what everyone else thinks. I can take more pictures of any of them if needed.
Barred Plymouth Rock 1 - 12 weeks old - Hoping for a pullet
Barred Plymouth Rock 2 - I'm 95% sure this is a roo...
This is my Mystery Chick. I picked her out at random from a feed store bin. She's super friendly, first to come running to my hand when I look into the brooder. I know she's probably a mix of some sort, but was hoping someone could give me some ideas as to what she could be. The bin was mostly...
I am using two ecoglow 20s to brood currently, and I really like them. No worrying about where/how to suspend a light etc. I spend a lot of time watching them during the day and their behaviour seems very natural. They venture out to feed, drink and play. If they get cold, or if something...
Congrats. Doing well! They're adorable.
My araucanas have been adopted by the chicks from my first hatch - they are teaching them the joys of running up to my hand in hopes of treats.
It's okay, it's just spiking due to the wet chicks. Open the vent holes though, as the chicks will need plenty of oxygen. The heat won't drop that much.
I would just leave them, if you're on day 18. Even if they take a bit longer it won't hurt them not to turn. The first 14 days are most important.
5am day 21, woke up to pee and went to check on eggs. The last egg has hatched, the chick is huge! So a very successful 100% hatch for me! I am...
