    Little Giant 10300

I put weights on the lid over each handle area to try to seal the lid better. Not convinced it really did much. I'm not sure I will bother moving the heater element or not. I'm pretty sure the thermostat and heater combo are not capable of being consistent. Every time I think it's starting...

    Little Giant 10300

Today, when I got home from work it was apparent that my brand new egg turner, 3 days into its second batch of eggs had quit working. With Miller Manufacturing s stellar 30 day warranty, I am hosed. I will never purchase any incubating related anything from miller ever again.

Three week old silver laced Wyandotte

Looks like normal growth to me for 3 weeks, but I don't do silverlaces. Mine don't usually feather out enough to move outside until 5 to 7 weeks. As for sex, I can usually tell from hatch to 3 days old, after that, I don't bother trying until at least a couple months old when my roos start...

    Little Giant 10300

Well, scratch the never above 105 part from last post. 105.5 on right side of Bator 100.9 on left, set at 93.7 on the incubator. I guess taping the temp probe to the side does not work.

    Little Giant 10300

Temperature inconsistency is the main issue. One day I need the thermostat set at 93.8 to keep one side under 102 and the other side barely above 98.2. Next day that setting will be cooking one side and the other will be about right, 99.5. Our house is a steady 70 where we have the incubator...

    Little Giant 10300

My 10300 is a disaster. I have attached the thermometer probe to the lid, hanging down at about top of egg height. I am calibrating with multiple reliable thermometers, which I always have to anyway. Hoping it helps with the variability of the probe moving around on the turner. This will be my...

humidity dropping too low when I unplug one plug

We run dry until day 18 as well, then bump to 65% or so.

humidity dropping too low when I unplug one plug

This is our 2nd year with a 10300. Calibrated with a known good thermometer, both were very close somewhere circa day 18 or 19 the thermometers diverged significantly and my trusted thermometer was reading 102 to 106. Only 8 of 42 hatched so far. We are on day 24 now and planning to float the...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Unfortunately, if it's -9 at your boxes rice probably won't do a lot for very long. You probably do need an electric solution.

Weird and really random question about chickens sleeping.....

My birds are tamer than a bag of ravens I suppose. We are a fairly utilitarian outfit, our birds are not pets for sure. You may have luck getting your hands on one or two during the day, maybe. At night, sky is the limit.

Weird and really random question about chickens sleeping.....

Centarchid, you win, I am wrong. I will send youvyhe citations referred to- they are referencing extreme conditions from what I understand in the abstracts. Interesting info. And for the record, I observe my birds daily at night and during the day and indeed they are very interesting animals...

Weird and really random question about chickens sleeping.....

Me too. I do all of my banding, and inspections after midnight when they barely even react to the handling.

DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

With the right number of birds and good insulation and ventilation, we were able to avoid heating last winter firbthe most part. I think we ran aheat lamp or two at 60 below ambient. This year I doubt we'll need that. The hen house stayed at it above freezing last winter most of the time. We...

I agree. And I think we can all agree that chickens sleep:-)

Weird and really random question about chickens sleeping.....

Good to know. I am not a zoologist but a practicing biologist for the last 20 years or so. I only have a handful of degrees and did not pursue anything after my MS. Like I said, not a zoologist or a physiologist for that matter. I agree with you, if your birds take off in flight instantly, they...

Weird and really random question about chickens sleeping.....

Mine too go to roost with full crops and even when the hen house is warm, which it seldom drops below 0F even at -50 F outside temps, I can go in grab my skittish birds and band them and fully inspect them long before they wake enough to be able to anything about it. Torpor? Maybe not. They...

Weird and really random question about chickens sleeping.....

In a warm environment with lots of food, no they probably do not enter torpor daily. However, I believe chickens can go into torpor. Not sure if they employ monocular rest or not butcwould be surprised if they are not capable.

Weird and really random question about chickens sleeping.....

They do sleep alright. Without sleep most animals will actually die. It is a necessity for the brain. Birds are different from mammals in their sleep in that some birds are capable of resting one side of the brain at a time, a useful adaptation for a critter that is on everyone else's menu...
