I got the impression people said that about a group of males, saying if one crowed, then the rest all followed suit. Sounds like it will be interesting to try.
I have heard a lot of people say it is time to process when they all start crowing. I am sure the first few days of a bunch of young roosters in crowing duels would be funny, and then not.
Hi all,
I have a question about raising non-meat breed males to get some meat from. I have 5 Cream legbar hens, and am planning to get 5 more hens and a rooster. The breeder I got my hens from says she breeds for mellow males, so I should have a low chance of a jerk that isn't worth the...
A day or two wouldn't put her in danger being reintroduced to the flock?
Inside the garage is a thought, then she wouldn't be in the wind or in danger from racoons at night.
Hi all,
I have a broody hen, and I would like to get her out of it. I have read about putting them in a separate enclosure ,up off the ground, so they can't maintain their warmth, and that this will get them out of the broody phase. I have a dog crate that I could use for this, but my a-frame...
I am going to be building a coop inside the barn this year, so I need to clear out the pigeons, house sparrows, and starlings that roost and nest in there. Pulled out the BRK ranger
I found a used DNT Zulus 3-12 night vision scope that should be here next week to replace the Bugbuster scope...
Shade is definitely something I will have to figure out, as the run will be on the south side of the barn. I will have a large awning where the autodoor is, but I may need to add more shade.
I think I will portion out 8-10 sq.ft./bird inside and also will build an awning over part of the exterior run so it remains relatively snow free. Sometimes the winds here drift the snow into places it seems like the laws of physics would prevent, but I'll do what I can. The rest of the run will...
Nope, missed the fact that there were some different colored words there. I will take a look
I like the separate area, I was thinking about a vestibule like that, could leave it open most of the time, but have it able to be closed for acclimation if introducting new birds, or putting turds in...
Dust in the barn will be fine, but I probably would add a little wood around the base to keep them from kicking a lot of straw and detritus out of the coop area.
Is your shed tall enough that it was worth putting in a HC ceiling, rather than running the walls all the way up. Is there another...
Is there any reason to make the walls solid in a coop contained inside a barn? Could the walls I am adding just be hardware cloth, properly framed of course, from floor to ceiling? Would the hens prefer a more enclosed space?
Looking at space in the barn again, the chicken tractor has been...
Hi all,
After a winter of keeping my chickens in a small low to the ground chicken tractor, I am looking at the barn and thinking a walk in space is 1000% better.
I am thinking about what I could put under the roosting bar. One option is obviously poop boards. Another thing I thought was I...
When my legbars were in the brooder I gave them dandelions out of the yard. Now that they are in the tractor they obliterate the wide leaved plants: dandelions, clover, plaintains, etc. but when I pull up a dandelion and throw it in the run they chow it down with relish
Four eggs out of my six 27 week old Legbar hens today, and four yesterday. They have been ramping up. Also found a broody today, so I got the raised hackles, growl, and a peck to the index finger for moving her to get the prized egg.
First time moving a broody hen. Hilarious. That Jurassic Park...
Agreed. I think three or four of my hens are laying the sky blue eggs, which I like, but two or three of the hens seem to be laying green tinged eggs, including this one with the spots. It adds a little variety to the egg carton.
