Welp, I tried. I blame @fuzzi and @thistlewick and all the others who keep posting pics of their beautiful Speckles! A new young lady will be ready on 9 July.
I’ll be getting one of a different breed from either the group before or after this one so that they’ll be same-aged buddies.
(By the...
My run is 8’ x 15’, with a city ordinance limit on flock size of 7, no roosters, and no real room to expand, so I concentrated on breed temperament when deciding what pullets to get.
These temperaments are tendencies, and don’t apply to each individual, but it’s working so far. 🤞🏻 I still...
Yep. It would be nice if they offered mirror images.
I think it must be more common in Nestera’s home territory of the UK to have coops sitting on the grass in the open, as you do, instead of located within a protected run. Inside of a run, you have to work with corners and doorways, which...
Yes, although I haven’t done this. You just part the pieces on the “wrong” side, with the rough outside surfaces on the inside, and the smooth inside surfaces on the outside.
- This is per something I finally found on their fantastically unhelpful website.
One nice thing about breeding Olive Eggers is that since they don’t breed true (yet? aren’t they all F1’s for now?), you build in repeat business. (But what if the sold pullets don’t obligingly produce olive eggs? Etc.)
Another thought (I’m with you about SOP’s) is breeding for local conditions...
Oh, good planning!
Well then, according to your current sizes and the guidelines above, you have room for up to 16 standard (not bantam, etc.) chickens in the coop, and 13-19 in the run.
I envy you all that space!
Hi, you’re replying to a 2009 post.
You’ll get better help if you start your own thread over on a different subforum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures.10/
Apologies if you’ve been raising chickens forever, but are you new to chicken-keeping? And how old are your current 7?
Many new chicken owners go out too big, too soon. There’s a lot to be said for holding off until your current ones have been laying a while and everyone has a nice rhythm...
Hi, welcome to BYC!
What exactly do you need help with?
How many chickens do you have? That coop will hold four chickens. (Four sq ft per standard sized chicken.) The run is barely enough for three (10-15 sq ft per chicken.)
Fellow AuDHD’er here! :frowI don’t know what forms your neurodivergence takes, but my brain likes novelty but isn’t so good with long-term perseverance. So I would be asking myself questions like:
1) If I want to sell eggs, what’s the local market like (brown eggs, white eggs, novelty colors...
The first appears to be a layer formulation (see the higher calcium levels), but it’s hard to read on my phone. The second appears to be all-flock, but oddly low in protein.
The tricky thing about buying a “barely-adequate” (in terms of protein) feed is that every treat you add throws off the...
I’m curious, have you considered sticking with just one type of poultry feed, and adding 96% lean ground beef and similar animal protein sources? I’ve given up on finding feed in the form that I like (fermentable whole grain), low or no corn or soy, and high protein, much of which is animal.
I did read here recently that it takes four crunched-up eggshells to supply the amount of Ca needed to lay one egg. It was just a casual mention, so I don’t know how accurate it is. At any rate, I do think you’ll need more than eggshells, unless you’re eating a ton of eggs from the store...
The lysine and methionine (amino acids that are parts of some proteins) look a lot better in the 20%, which I’m assuming is all-flock, as do some of the other nutrients.
I’d go with the 20% with oyster shells and egg shells on the side for the layers. The roos/ cockerels won’t bother with them.
