Coop floor substrate and nest bedding

I think this last time I used just 1 bag of shavings. I don't add any.

Coop floor substrate and nest bedding

I clean the poop boards daily (try to at least) and I scoop out all the pine shavings on the floor once or twice a year.

    Any breed guesses? weird feathers…

Where did you get them from? If it was from TSC it might help identify them, they usually get the same breeds.

    Dirty eggs?

I'd toss them in and see what happens. I pretty much go against the grain though lol I've recently hatched dirty eggs. I put dirty eggs in the fridge to eat. I sell dirty eggs. I clean dirty eggs sometimes. Dirty eggs are just eggs IMO. If they are not cracked they are viable. Eat or hatch.

    First Time Broody Hen Hatch-Along

I've only had 1 successful broody hen hatch and raise her hens to adulthood. The other 3 or 4 that tried let their chicks get killed by the other hens. good luck! Looking good so far! Ideally, IMO...this is the best way to raise a new batch of chicks. I wish all my hens would do this and be...

Thoughts on Scratch & Peck food... worth the price?

$15.00 50lbs 22% protien Layer Feed At my local co-op. That's what I offer 24/7 to my chickens. I feed them table scrapes a few times a week. That's all they get. Oh, and oyster shell and grit as they want it. I collect eggs daily. No problems. Folks have gone out of their mind with feed in...

Complete lies, myths, and falsehoods with chickens

I was told last year that you can't eat fertilized eggs. haha. I told someone I have a rooster with my hens and I collect and eat the eggs. He told me you can't eat fertilized eggs. I laughed at him and simply said OK.

Complete lies, myths, and falsehoods with chickens

I'm sure we've all heard them. Advice that is a complete lie, uneducated, falsehood, garbage, myth, makes no sense whatsoever. A recent one I just saw in a thread here was "don't pick up baby chicks until they are 3 weeks old or they will die" Wow. OK. So what are some complete myths that...

Introduced the almost 4 week old chicks to the hens today

Temps were in the 50's & 60's over night and they have been fine. But I wasn't expecting the temps to drop to below freezing like they are later this week so I'll likely put the heat lamp in there just to be safe. Although I think they will still be fine as they are feathered out enough. BUT...

What did you do in the garden today?

That will do it! Be safe out there in the sun! It's no joke. We were starting to warm up to the mid 80's. Now over the next few days it will be down to the high 30's again. Mid TN weather. 🤷‍♂️

Brahma "chick" missing feathers on back

I've seen this from molting and overbreeding. At 6 weeks they ain't molting. Do you have a rooster with them? Cause at 6 weeks the rooster might be getting ambitious with them. I think that's unlikely...but... Also, how clean is the coop? Mites? Keep an eye on them for a few more weeks. If the...

URGENT Hatching help please - what happened?

Ahh. That may be the case. The OP doesn't exactly say at what point the eggs were floated and drilled though. If it was after they were lifeless...that's very odd for 19 to suddenly die. If it was shortly after the hatched chicks were removed then it makes more sense the cause of death -...

URGENT Hatching help please - what happened?

Just saw this. Sounds like you killed them. Sad but true. I've hatched quite a few eggs and the chicks bump in to them and toss them around and it doesn't bother the unhatched eggs at all. They still hatch. Floating them and drilling in to them surely killed them. Don't do that next time.

URGENT Hatching help please - what happened?

On day 19 the eggs were fine and you heard them chirping. So sounds like something happened after day 19. You say you pulled the 6 chicks from the incubator after they hatched. How long was the incubator open while you pulled the chicks? I don't think it was a temp issue. 99.5-100.5 is not a...
