they came to me as Black Copper. They do have minimal copper on their hackles (over melanized??). I don’t know too much about the blacks, I’m assuming the roosters are all black? The roosters in this line are full colored.
Thanks for the pics. I’m hatching f1 olive eggers that are from a barred whiting true blue rooster and black copper marans hens. I was planning on keeping all the barred pullets. I hope they look similar to your pics but with smaller pea combs.
Edit: I just got a pic sent to me from someone...
Here’s 2 egg laying BCM showing some off colored eyes. I think the bottom one is the top’s mother. All 5 marans laid an egg yesterday. I’ve got 2 that lay a consistently dark egg. The others have faded to the lighter speckled color you see.
Good luck on the hatch.
I agree on the keep yourself busy approach. My best hatch was when I totally left them alone.
I’m doing a dry hatch so far and humidity has been right at 25% for the first 2 weeks. I’m pretty sure I’m going to add water though on day 18 to bring it up to 50%. The die...
The only ones I am concerned about marking are the pure black copper marans chicks. I want to make sure I can tell the difference between them and the F1 Olive eggers. The easter eggers are all under a broody hen, so I don't have to worry about those getting mixed with the incubator chicks, and...
I hooked up this bright craftsman light with a rubber tip from a walking cane. Bright mofo. Looks like I have 7 out of 8 true blue eggs are alive and kicking. One was a blood ring. I’ve been having fertility issues with that one particular hen so 7 out of 8 is good. I might still be able to...
Thats the plan. I need to find my leg bands I bought a year ago and haven't used. I did get hatching bags, they seem kind of tight fitting, so I'm looking for some small plastic crates or containers to wrap the bag around. Something like this.
My blue eggs are doing well so far at day 11 I candled 3 of them and saw veins and movement and the weights are close to the target.
My big fear with marans eggs is the dreaded shrink wrap. I haven't concluded if low or high humidity makes it better or worse.
I should say I selected out of 79 total eggs... 38 round ones that are predicted pullets... and 5 pointy ones that are predicted male. These 5 are from the pure Black Copper Marans that I picked up from the local farm. I'm hoping to get a decent rooster out of those big dark eggs.
