Thanks! My bc olive egger hatched yesterday.
This hatch turned out to be a rough one. 5 out of 8 marans quit around days 7-10, and only 1 bc olive made it to lockdown. The other 2 marans haven’t hatched yet. So a grand total of 2/13 hatched haha.
I’m going to give it till tomorrow morning...
I finally got permission from the wife to buy some chicks since I lost so many eggs, so I ended up getting some cheap marans from a guy off Craigslist. They aren’t dark but I think if I mix them with my two cockerels I can darken it up over a few generations.
My plan is to start a clan...
I bought some hatching eggs from the same group Ferdinand came from to hopefully hatch some hens out. Terrible luck.
I candled on day 18 as I pulled the egg turner out and 5/8 had quite developing. The other 3 I couldn’t really tell what was going on so I just left them in there. I’m on day...
Hey chicken folks!
I wanted to start a thread on my Marans and Olive Egger struggles. My priorities are dark egg layers first, then eventually breeding to the SOP for the BCMs. I plan to back-cross my olive eggers and darken those up too.
For a few years I’ve been pretty obsessed with...
Good to know about the Orpington comb. I’ll have to be patient and see what color egg she ends up laying.
The silver you’re seeing could possibly be sourdough starter that I feed them lol.
Hey guys I have a few questions about my birds as they’re growing out.
#1: my best looking pullet seems to have a weird looking pea comb? I’m hoping it’s a defect and she’s not crossed with an Orpington. The breeder I bought her from had the marans and Orpingtons all separated, but it’s...
Hey everyone. I’m looking to back cross my OEs with my Marans roo. My goal is to get a dark olive egg. One hen lays a really cool shade of olive and the other lays a regular brown.
Would only hatching the olive eggs give me a greater chance of getting the dark olive, or would I have an equal...
Good advice. I’ll give it another month to make up my mind.
Also want to add that I’ve enjoyed thumbing through your thread. You have some great looking birds!
The one on the right does seem to have the best tail of the group. He is also the smallest and least vigorous of the bunch. I plan on waiting until they’re 6-8 months before I make a decision. I’ll post up some more pics today
That would be great! Egg color would be my biggest priority for them. I bought one cockerel from one breeder and two others from a separate breeder.
I plan to keep the best looking of the group. Right now they’re all around the 14-16 week mark.
The mother of the pullets lays eggs like this:
