    Air sac determines sex.

UPDATE: I wanted to update for those who felt this method was worth considering. I had incubator issues and some bad weather interference, but was lucky enough to hatch 8 chicks. One was a Copper Maran egg that was male (air sac in the top). The rest of the hatch are female per wing check...

    Air sac determines sex.

Reading the replies to my question, which, I guess hoped would result in positive responses, has truly left me disappointed. Basically, I have had a few, very few positive responses, and a list of responses informing me how foolish I was to 1. waste my time on reading such an article from so...

    That’s why I don’t attempt vent checking.

    Air sac determines sex.

The first two note the air sac to the side. The third pic notes the air sac is slightly larger and more to the center on the second non incubated day. Some are difficult to determine. The booklet states if the air sack is facing away from the observer and cannot be viewed at all it should be a...

    Air sac determines sex.

I wonder if they get a tax deduction for the destruction of male chicks? Is that a loss?

    Air sac determines sex.

I will! I want to compare that with the 'hanging the chick by the feet' method. A male is supposed to hang straight, the hen will curl. If held by the head, the male will hang straight and the hen will pull up the feet.

    Air sac determines sex.

It was 1921 after all. We barely had qualified medical doctors at that time. I appreciate the input. It will not be a great waste for us as we will enjoy those top air sac eggs with bacon and toast. Just a fun experiment for a backyarder.

    Air sac determines sex.

The booklet is titled How to Tell the Sex of an Egg Before Incubation by Thomas Quisenberry. If you google that, select the USDA article. Click on 'full Article' and you can read the book. It is also available on Amazon. I actually stumbled across it while getting ready to set up my...

    Air sac determines sex.

This study, as well as other articles I have read, indicates the male does not determine the sex of the chick. This is determined by the female. It compared the sex determination process to that of bees. The queen lays the eggs. According to what the larva are fed, a drone, queen, or worker...

    Air sac determines sex.

I recently read a booklet by Thomas Quisenberry that was titled How to Tell The Sex of an Egg Before Incubation. In the book it described candling a chicken egg prior to incubation. If the air sac is off center and can only be viewed from the front and sides of the egg, a female will hatch...

Is the sex ratio always 50/50?

I recently ran across a book by Thomas Quisensberry titled How to Tell the Sex of an Egg Before Incubation. A Mrs. Noda Fry determined (in the early 1900's) that sex could be determined by looking at the air sac. When candling the fresh egg, if the sac on a pre incubated egg is to the side of...

    Curled up chick toes

This is my American Breese chick, Paddyfoot. I had to help her out of the egg. At any rate, this is how I braced her toes. After 24 hour I could see a difference. I took a Bandaid, cut out the pad, positioned the toes on one sticky side and topped the top side of the foot with the other...
