Checking on our broody hatched chicks and seeing one jump up onto the hens back instead of under her wings. It was funny as once it got up their it lifted its head high as to say “I am King or Queen of the hill”.
We have used both, but not at the same time. We used heat plates for our last two hatches and I like them better. As has been mentioned, unless it is really cold , chicks will run in and out of the plate . Even standing on top of them at times. I cannot say for sure, but it seems we had less...
We just had a broody hen hatch 7 eggs on Saturday. (One chick died though) We did not intend to have chicks but by the time I realized my husband was not willing to take eggs from under a broody hen they had developed. She remained in the nesting box (cut out milk carton with nesting pad)...
It is fascinating to watch hatching chicks but it is also worrisome. I find the best thing is to keep yourself busy. I would love to see pics when they hatch.
Most incubators recommend distilled water, though I never use it. I do not believe it would cause issues of any kind. This past year I went with the dry hatch method. No added water the first 18 days and you add a little water the last 3 and it worked out fine. Since I am in FL there is no...
I can only go in my own experience of hatching. I do not recall ever seeing an evenly distributed air sac on a developing egg. Last year we hatched 21 eggs of them 8 were male and the rest were female.
We just had our broody Buff Orpington hen (Linda’s Stewart) hatch 6 chicks. She is in a coop and run with one Speckled Sussex roo with 10 Isa Brown hens and 7 Speckled Sussex hens. From the color of the eggs they all looked like they were laid by Isa Brown hens as our Speckled Sussex hens lay...
We have a lot of colors , more important though is we have our first egg from one of our Silverudd Blue pullets. Beautiful green. It is a little dirty because she laid it on the ground.
We are accidental Jersey Giant owners (We order Barred Rocks). Unfortunately one of them turned out to be a cockerel (8 months old now). He is my least favorite as he likes to spar with us. Cannot turn your back on him. The NJ pullets are fine. That being said we have not had issues with...
We dry hatched with a Maticoopx twice with a 80% hatch rate. Bought it off Amazon for less than 150.00. I just checked and it is $119.00 now. Auto turner and a day counter. We also use a two Govee Hygrometer’s for monitoring to ensure temps and humidity. We never went about 35% humidity...
I never heard or pecans in crust of anything until a recipe I made recently. Pumpkin cheesecake with almond and pecan crust. Delicious! It would a pecan lover dream to have in a pecan pie.
