Welcome to the coop! If all else falls you can take medical scissors to cut it out but that should be the last resort. (Had to do it once only.). I believe oil will work.
We have a generator that can run our refrigerator and freezers, two small back up a/c units used for storms, well pump and electric outlets. We cannot run our electric range though as it is too much of a draw. We lost electric during Helene for a full day but with Irma we lost it for 2 days...
It is a very large brooder box with room for the hen to roam. We have a run we will be putting them in this week during the day. We have to put up netting first.
We are in Florida and just had a broody hatch 6 eggs. We have them on a brooder box I. Our screened porch. We have 4 additional brood hens but only one we are giving eggs too. She has 4 (she is a small hen) and as of yesterday 3 of the four are definitely developing. One has developed but we...
Living in Florida and have a broody hen who hatched 6 last Saturday/Sunday in the coop with all other chickens and one rooster. We placed her and the chicks into a brooder box on Sunday afternoon and put it on our screened porch. The coldest I has gotten is 59 and that is for maybe a minute or...
Just checked and our araucana/silverrudd blue hen Esperanza Essie for short) has 4 mix breed eggs developing. (Tis the season to go broody here.) I miss my Essie she is so sweet and would fly up to me for treats but now she is broody she is a screamer when you come near. I know that one egg...
Checking on our broody hatched chicks and seeing one jump up onto the hens back instead of under her wings. It was funny as once it got up their it lifted its head high as to say “I am King or Queen of the hill”.
We have used both, but not at the same time. We used heat plates for our last two hatches and I like them better. As has been mentioned, unless it is really cold , chicks will run in and out of the plate . Even standing on top of them at times. I cannot say for sure, but it seems we had less...
We just had a broody hen hatch 7 eggs on Saturday. (One chick died though) We did not intend to have chicks but by the time I realized my husband was not willing to take eggs from under a broody hen they had developed. She remained in the nesting box (cut out milk carton with nesting pad)...
It is fascinating to watch hatching chicks but it is also worrisome. I find the best thing is to keep yourself busy. I would love to see pics when they hatch.
