I have 17 RIR chicks that turn 4 weeks today. Aside from darker combs and developing wattles what other traits could help me tell the cockerels from the pullets at this age?
I'll get pictures, I just need some pointers on what to look for while I sort them out so I can leg band the suspected males.
No idea, but he remined me of this charter from Pokémon. My son watches the show and the charters name is Guzman . . .in case your chick doesn't have a name yet, lol.
With her coloring
And his crest
I could get some really cute chicks . . . she's an EE and he's a BYM, I think they both have Icelandic in their mix, but maybe that's just wishful thinking, lol.
Edited: typo
This is them as chicks
I find it safer the to assume the friendliest are roos . . .they are little heartbreakers, lol
And I agree 4, 6 and 10 are roos.
Icelandic is at the top of my list for chicks next time around, they're so awesome looking.
I'm not very good at breeds but for the videos you can upload to YouTube and post a link or . . .
What I do is, move the video from my phone to my computer and use VLC Media player to take stills from the video and post those.
These are my newbie guesses
P = Pullet (girl)
C = Cockerel (boy)
? = :idunno
The ones I'm guessing are boys I can see the tiniest bit of wattle development, but they're still pretty young to be sure.
Mine like to parkour around the run to get to the highest spot, lol. Keeping them from getting over a fence will be a challenge. I've already moved several outdoor storage units away from the fence line and put them against the house. My current rule of thumb is, if I can see the top of it...
When they start roosting on it, rather than sleeping under it, is my cue to remove it. This typically happens around 2.5 - 3 weeks. They're mostly feathered by then and can still huddle together if they get chilled.
I had my incubator get unplugged around day 10 and had no idea how long it was unplugged. It was fine when I went to bed and unplugged the next morning, it could've been up to 8 hours.
It was my first time hatching and I hadn't found this site at the time. I just let them be. It did take until...
Mine had a small coop in it, but they stopped going in it when they were able to land on top of it, so it seemed like it was just taking up space. The biggest issue I have with the run is, it doesn't have wood to attach roost bars or nest boxes too. I'm thinking about using a free standing roost...
I have friend that's willing I just have to quit changing the plan. lol
When I was thinking of repurposing my old shed the idea of stuffing those poor chickens in an oven kept me from moving forward. Especially since making it tolerable would of meant running electric or having solar panels...
