Is this a Rhode Island Red?

Awhile ago I ended up sending those photos to the hatchery my Western Rustics came from and they verified which ones were WR for me. Now that they're all about 8 weeks old, it's super obvious who is what!

    Plot Twist Poultry flocks!

Time for our hens! We ended up losing one of the lavender orpingtons, and another of the lavender orpingtons ended up being a cockerel that we're seeing if he stays well behaved. A note since I've read many posts about the dangers of heat lamps: we aren't planning to use them again. The...

    Plot Twist Poultry flocks!

Starting off with young chick pics! These are our meat birds when we brought them home. First all the Cornish xs, then the others are Western Rustics. I'll add more later but I have a book to finish writing!

    Plot Twist Poultry flocks!

This is honestly for me to have a place to dump my chicken pictures and general posts about them. I've got to stop spamming my friends 🤣 Seriously, I take my pictures of my chickens than I ever did of my son when he was a baby.

Cockerel being a jerk or just normal behavior?

I'm only laughing because of the image the scene conjured in my head. I don't have any older hens in this flock, but he has honestly seemed to calm down already. I think a big part of it may have been their access to the run was new.

Cockerel being a jerk or just normal behavior?

@BigBlueHen53 that's something I didn't consider and will have to absolutely keep in mind. I know they aren't dogs, but I approach giving treats with a similar mindset as I do with dogs (and all other animals): only accepted behavior is given treats. With all of them, they get the treats on MY...

Cockerel being a jerk or just normal behavior?

Absolutely! We posted at the same time, but I've added that so far he isn't aggressive towards me at all. I absolutely wouldn't stand for that and would appropriately reassert my dominance as top flock member.

Cockerel being a jerk or just normal behavior?

Yeah, I assumed it would be a bit brutal which is why, since there isn't blood or feathers flying, it could just be normal dominance behavior begining. And I fully an prepared for what looks like rough/scarry breeding habits in the future. I guess my big concern is like, okay is this just the...

Cockerel being a jerk or just normal behavior?

This is my first time raising a cockerel with my egg hens because one of the lavender orpingtons turned out to be a cockerel. They are all five weeks old and from what I can tell, he is the only cockerel. He is honestly starting to be a jerk? He's chasing quite a few of the girls around, but...

Lost instructions on my aivituvan coop automatic Chicken Door.

Everything I found suggests you can use the Run-Chicken's universal guide? Have you checked that out to see if it's familiar at all?

Kiddo thought grit was treats, gave to CornishX, worried about crops.

He's 7, but he knows we don't pick the meat birds up. He mostly engages with the eggers, but sometimes he'll want to go give the meat birds treats too. It's pretty uncommon, though. Actually, it's pretty uncommon for him to go to the chickens without one me or his dad. Even this time I was out...

    Bully Breed Thread!!!

This is Sasha. She's an 80 pound APBT who has the same amount of brain cells as an Orange Cat. All she wants to do is be on a human, chase a ball, and give an actually annoying amount of licks. She has absolutely zero prey drive, to the point where the squirrels now don't care about her at all...

Kiddo thought grit was treats, gave to CornishX, worried about crops.

This makes me feel a lot better! We feed them a local broiler mix and then vegetable scraps for treats, along with tossing them some grass clippings and worms sometimes for enrichment. I'll hook up a proper grit container for them then, as opposed to just tossing some out for them along with...

Kiddo thought grit was treats, gave to CornishX, worried about crops.

My kiddo thought the grit we had was food/treats. We probably had about a cup and a half total. They're five weeks old, but we also give them greens, occasionally, hence the grit. In the Cornish stampede (is it called a stampede when it's chickens?) towards him, he dropped it all. By the time he...

    Rooster and flock question

Color of eggs is pretty important to me too, and while white might make a good contrast to the more colorful... it's still a little boring.

How to breed meat birds from Freedom Rangers

When you say rotate them out, can you explain that to me like I'm I'm a child? I blame getting off of work for my brain not working. How many hens do you keep for those three roosters?

White Cornish: Building a Quality, Sustainable Flock for Meat and More.....

From what I gather from a comment above, OP isn't around here anymore. Does anyone else do this or a similar process? We're looking into what it'll take to do this for our meat birds.

    Rooster and flock question

That seems to be the general consensus and something that I probably glossed right over while cooing over them.
